Know Your Constitution
Physical & Mental Traits Under Vata, Pitta, Kapha Thus, on a finer grouping of psychosomatic constitutions, it is possible to categorize
human population into 10 Groups. Of all the 10 groups, population with single dosha dominance is rare entity. Persons with a prakriti
predominated by only one dosha –are highly problematic entities in many ways. The Samaprakiti –where there is a precise equilibrium
of three doshas, is highly desirable constitutional type. A majority of human population tends to exhibit the characters of a dual prakriti.
Most of us have two doshas dominating our prakriti.
4. Ayurveda in Nutshell
Ayurveda, India's holistic, integrated, physiotherapeutic medical system is based
upon the universal natural law of balancing the five elements (ether, air, fire, water
and earth) that make up the physical body. When one or more of these elements go
out of balance because of improper diet and life style, various diseases and mental
disturbances can manifest. Ayurveda explains that these five elements are kept
intact in the body by three subtle forces called doshas.
The key to maintaining physical and mental health is in keeping these elements and
doshas in harmonic balance through proper diet, herbs and life style, otherwise
early aging and various diseases can manifest. The three doshas are called Vata
(sattva), Pitta (raga) and Kapha (tama).
These three doshas can even be traced back to the very beginning of creation as
representing the three Gods in Vedic wisdom Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma. Vata is the
underlying subtle force ruling over ether and air, Pitta rules fire and Kapha is
responsible for keeping the water and earth elements in balance. One or more of
these doshas or elements will predominate in every individual living entity creating
seven possible body types. By knowing which type you are by symptoms the proper
diet and herbal treatment can be established for you
5. The Western Perception of being Healthy
In the west people generally judge their health according to their
muscle tone however in the east they see the internal organs as
being the most important aspect of good health.
All diseases result "not" from poor muscle tone but from poor
internal organ function. Regular use of quality herbs, a healthy
ayurvedic diet according to your constitution and exercise can
help keep our internal organs strong and healthy so in old age
we have a much better chance of warding off diseases that
result from poor internal organ function.
Keeping in good health is our best investment for prevention of
the diseases that come as we get older..
Be a part of Ayurveda, the Spiritual Health Science which could
be the World's health care system of the next millennium
Balance your health in a natural way according to a 5,000 year
old perfected health care system. India's Vedic Medical System
called "Ayurveda".
6. The Four Step Treatment Programme
CONSULTATION
Treatment in Ayurveda is a two pronged process. One involving actual treatment. The other- the more important- a life-style
consultation. Followed by a cleansing of the mind and body, which then has to be maintained by the individual for the
treatment to be effective.
Every person is understood to be 3 dimensional. i.e. comprised of body, mind and soul. And these 3 dimensions are set in an
individualised pattern based on the predominant dosha (i.e. Prakruti). An imbalance in anyone of these dimensions leads to "ill-
being" (Vikruti). It is only after a detailed consultation, that the physician determines the cause of this imbalance. Using the 3
ancient techniques of observation (Darsana), touching/feeling (Sparsana) and interrogation (Prasna). After which the patient is
given a detailed description of what he might expect to undergo over the next few days/weeks.
ACTUAL TREATMENTS
ABHYANGA : Or conventional oil therapy. Where the medicated oils are gently applied over the body. To alleviate fatigue,
delay aging, improve sleep; etc.

NASYA: Is an instilling of 2 drops of oil in the nose just before inhalation.
GANDOOSHA : Or gargling lasts 5 minutes using different kinds of liquids (depending on each individual's need).

ANJANA : Is the lining of the rims of the eye with an anti-infection paste for 5 minutes. To improve eyesight and delay cataract
formation.
KARNAPOORANA : Is the pouring of 24 drops of medicated oil in each ear for 5 minutes. To protect the ears from infection.
SNANA : Or a bath with herbal powders is administered at the end of each session. The first treatment session (including
consultation) takes up to 3 hours. Subsequent sessions take approximately 90 minutes.
DHARA: Is a treatment process where the patient is made to lie on a special wooden bed (a droni), after which, the medicated
oil /milk/buttermilk/ etc. are poured in a prescribed, continuous steam on his head by the therapist. Who is assisted in
this treatment by 2 other therapists, who help him with the oil application over the patient's body.
