Music Defined in This Book
Music is an auditory science and art which
1) uses well ordered sounds and their combination that moves through time and;
2) synergizes with the beauty of form and feeling of emotional intensity that tells of
every human existence, experience and society.
What really is music?
Music for me is a gift from heaven, whether on the creator’s side or the listener’s side, which relates to something that is to be
expressed and cultivated from our feelings within and exchanged outside with artistic approach along natural scientific clues. It
is a phenomenon so vast& expressive, too noble and elusive that I must ask forgiveness for I can’t find words to fully describe it
with just bearing & confinement; but a language that is very forgiving and universal that transcends race, vocabulary, age and
philosophy- which makes it the mostbeautiful language there is. Whether my definition be right or wrong, I don’t know…
What is music? I still don’t knowbut let us still explore.

B. MUSIC’S BIG THREE - Elements
Music, in its totality, has three main elements. Anytime you play something on your guitar, or listen
to a song, you will surely always encounter one or more of these elements.
RHYTHM
Movement in musical time, with periodical recurrence of accent.
Simply, rhythm is timing of the notes that you are playing - the
tick and the tock, the 1-2-3-CLAP-1-2-3-CLAP… etc.
HARMONY
In music, harmony manifests itself as a
pleasing sensation in the listener as the
ear discerns more than one distinct source
of sound.
The basic guitar chords that we play are
composed of notes that are ‘in harmony.’
A guitar solo playing over some bass lines
that blend beautifully is ‘in harmony.’
You could add as many instruments as you
like and if they sound pleasing to the ears
together, then they’re in harmony.
MELODY
A melody is a rhythmical succession of single
tones, with the most parts belonging to a given
key, that are so related together as to form a
musical thought, at once pleasing to the ear.
Try this. Hum the first song that comes into
your mind. That is melody.

C. 12 INDIVIDUAL SOUNDS of WESTERN MUSIC & INTERVALS
Music is translated thru our ears, that is, in the simplest idea, we can’t see it.
But for the purpose of easier instruction, let us imagine that music is made up of 12 equally divided
blocks, each block representing a musical tone.
INTERVAL - distance between two tones ( 1 block = 1 tone)
a. half step interval (a.k.a semitone)
small interval from one note to the next closest note, higher or lower
(the interval between a particular block and the block beside it)
b. whole step interval (a.k.a tone)
a musical interval of two half-step intervals
The pitch of a note is how high or low it sounds.
Musicians often find it useful to talk about how much higher or lower one note is than another
e.g. ‘a note half step above; or a note a whole step below’

If you use half step intervals all through out the 12 notes, a scale called chromatic scale is born.

D. 7/12 - THE SEVEN MAJOR TONES
Seven out of the 12 tones have been given major significance.
They are the 7 Major Tones, which collectively acts as the backbone from
which almost everything that has to do with melody & harmony in music ex-
pands from.
HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS?
Grasping this thoroughly is the secret to understanding the mysteries of
chord formation, chord progression, scale derivation, modes and a lot more
very easily.

DID YOU KNOW?
The “do-re-mi” we’ve been singing since childhood are actually the 7 Major Tones.

A: Blocks 8 and 9 will show us the ‘octave’ relationship, which simply means that blocks 1 & 8
are technically just the same notes, only that 8 is a higher pitch version of 1.
That is why when singing “do-re-mi” you end with another ‘do’, but this time a “higher do”
Octave – two pitches with the same name, located 12 half steps apart.
“8” is an octave higher from “1” - “1” is an octave lower from “8”
The same applies to: 2 & 9 | 3 & 10 | 5 & 11 | And so on...
Q : If there are only 7major tones, then what are the blocks 8, 9 and so on for?
First, let us locate which of the 12 tones consist the major 7.

As you may have noticed, we used
numbers to name the
7 Major Tones.
Here are some other terms used to
name the tones we use in western
music. The numeric, tone and de-
gree name use are notlimited to
the major scale onlybut to others
scales as well.
IMPORTANT
The 7 major tones were not just randomly picked out of thin air.
Their positions are actually derived from half steps & whole steps combination in a
specific formula: W - W - H - W - W - W - H
IMPORTANT TRUTH
The 7 major tones in this formula is actually the Major Scale. Understand how the major scale works
(in & out) and tasks like analyzing songs and licks becomes a piece of cake.
GOLDEN RULE
You can’t dive into deeper theory without first laying a very thorough knowledge of the Major
Scale.
And the first step is hard coding the formula into our mind.

The musical alphabet goes from “A to G”, then back to “A” again.
As you continue up the musical alphabet, the pitches of the notes get higher
(when you go past G up to A again)
Only notes “B & C” and “E & F” are separated by a half step interval. The
rest of the notes are separated by whole step intervals.
To easily memorize the letters that are separated by
a half step, simply remember the phrase:
“Big Cat Eats Fish”
No matter what happens, BC & EF will always stay
beside each other.

F.ACCIDENTALS - for the empty blocks

These “empty blocks” can be named using ACCIDENTALS - Flat (b) and Sharp (#) to be specific.
Flat (b) means “a tone below” || Sharp (#) means “a tone above”
This symbol is also called “natural”, also an accidental. Its use is to “return a note” to its original state, that
is without sharps or flats. You’ll find this symbol often used on pieces written in standard notation.
JUST REMEMBER: Flat tire and thumb tack on the floor

Q: Does that mean that “C#” and “Db” (along with D# & Eb and so on…) are the same
sounds?
A: Yes. The term for that is “Enharmonic”, meaning different notations with the same
sound.

POWER TIP:
How to easily land on the right notes of the major scale
using the half step intervals of a scale as a guide.

REMEMBER: There are only 2 half step intervals in
a major scale (and it’s derivatives) ANYWHERE and
on WHICHEVER STRING on the guitar.
There will always be
2 whole steps before ...
And after the half step
interval of a major scale.
POWER TIP!
The trick is to
1) visually mark where the half step intervals are placed over the fret board
2) instantly visualize 2 notes that are whole step intervals apart from both sides of your marks
This trick can always be used with Major and minor scales and their modes (more on modes on up-
coming chapters).
Practice on a single key first, with one string, subsequently adding more strings until you cover the 6
strings.
THIS IS A VERY CONVENIENT WAY TO VISUALIZE & MEMORIZE THE MAJOR
SCALE OVER THE FRET BOARD.

“Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said…..
“Then I thank you from my heart.”
As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his
faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Year’s later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were
baffled.
They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study
her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he
heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.
Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to room. Dressed
in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He
went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life.
From that day he gave special attention to the case. After a long struggle, the
battle was won.
Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval.
He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her
room.
She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay
for it all.
Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill.
She read these words…..
“Paid in full with one glass of milk”
(Dr. Kelly is a founding doctor of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.)
