3. Solomon’s Prayer (1 Kings 3:5-9) At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
4. Solomon’s Prayer (1 Kings 3:5-9) "Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?"
5. Legendary King (1 Kings 4:29-34) God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. Solomon's wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the men of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. … And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations.
6. Legendary King (1 Kings 4:29-34) He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. He described plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also taught about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. Men of all nations came to listen to Solomon's wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom.
7. Becomes a Fool (1 Kings 11:1-4) King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh's daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, "You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods." Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.
8. Becomes a Fool (1 Kings 11:1-4) He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.
10. Something About Everything Laziness Proverbs 21:25 NIV The sluggard's craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work. Proverbs 15:19 NIV The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway.
11. Something About Everything Tranquility Proverbs 14:30 NIV A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. Proverbs 17:1 NIV Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.
12. Something About Everything Kindness Proverbs 15:1 NIV A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 19:17 NIV He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.
13. Something About Everything Good wife Proverbs 19:14 NIV Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORD. Not-so-good wife Proverbs 21:9 NIV Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.
14. Something About Everything Adultery Proverbs 5:1-5 NIV My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.
15. Most Important Proverb Proverbs 1:7 NIV The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
16. The Fear of the Lord Proverbs 2:1-6 NIV My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
21. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Last week, David’s sin (adultery with his friend’s wife, treachery against his friend by having him killed). Also confession & forgiveness.Confession in Psalm 51 in Israel’s song book. Which of us would take our blackest sin & put it in a hymnal for all the church to see?Second half of 2 Samuel tells of the rest of David’s life. His sin was forgiven, but consequences plagued him the rest of his life.Infant son with Bathsheba died. Amnon raped Tamar, then was killed by her brother, Absalom. Absalom led revolt & defiled David’s wives during that revolt.David’s marriage to Bathsheba began in sin, but God blessed that marriage with another son, Solomon, who became heir to the throne, and an ancestor of Jesus! When God forgives, he doesn’t make us undo all our misdeeds! He accepts us just as we are!1 Kings tells of the reign of David’s son Solomon
Solomon’s prayer for wisdomBegins with a vision — God said Solomon could have anything
Solomon knew that God’s kindness to David was due to his father’s faithfulness to God, demonstrated in righteous attitudes & actions. Solomonacknowledged his own immaturity & need for God’s wisdom (age 20 at accession). In calling himself a little child, he was admitting his inexperience. His responsibility as leader & judge of God’s people weighed heavily on him. So he requested a discerning heart (lit., “a hearing heart”) tuned to the voice of God so he could lead Israel as God wanted the nation to be led. He acknowledged his dependence on God by referring to himself as God’s servant.God made him the wisest of all peopleGod added wealth and long life (reigned 40 years; 970 - 930 B.C.)

Queen of Sheba1 Kings 10:6-9 NIV She said to the king, "The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. (7) But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard. (8) How happy your men must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! (9) Praise be to the LORD your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the LORD's eternal love for Israel, he has made you king, to maintain justice and righteousness."Extended the political borders even further than his father DavidBuilt the temple and centralized worship in JerusalemAmassed immense wealth
Solomon like many others — starts strong but ends weakEarly on marries Pharaoh’s daughterEnd of life: wisest man becomes a fool (in his own words) — 11:1-4
Ignored God’s warning to kings:Deuteronomy 17:17-20 NIV (17) He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold. (18) When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites. (19) It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees (20) and not consider himself better than his brothers and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.Forced labor — heavy taxation (problems warned by Samuel)Only thing that matters is faithfulness to the covenant (not wisdom, power, wealth)God tears the country in two (10 northern tribes; 2 southern)
Solomon wrote 3,000 proverbsSome — along with those written by others — collected in the book of Proverbs
Fools look only at the short-term (≠ consequences) — wisdom looks long-term
Most important — 1:7If you want to be wise — starts with the fear of the Lord“Fear” is not being frightened (unless of judgment) or being polite
Fear of the Lord means reverential awe — worshipful respect – faithful obedienceIf you search for wisdom, you will find GodTrue wisdom starts with knowing who God is (2:1-5)Once you know God, you know that he is the only source of true wisdom (2:6)If you hear anything this morning … God knows bestGod’s ways are true — right — God our Father knows best
Two Kinds of People in this WorldThose who believe God is right & those who believe God is wrong
1. Wise person believes that God’s ways are always the best waysDespite what friends say— “in-crowd” — psychological fadDespite hormones and a young person’s drive towards independenceDespite the apparent — short-term — benefits of sin2. Teachable; Open to learning even if it means being disciplined by GodProverbs 3:11-12 NIV My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, (12) because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.3. Think long-termRighteousness — God’s way — is rewarded in the long-termDon’t make trading cards for a wise person — name athletic shoes after them
1. Don’t listen to God — think their friends know betterIn this corner — God — already lived forever — made everything — knows everything — bench whateverIn this corner — friend from school — not even through adolescence — make a mess — knows almost nothing — bench a joint2. Ensnared by sinProverbs 5:22-23 NIV The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast. (23) He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly.3. Fools look at the short termIgnore consequences — take the easy road — instant gratificationPhysical and emotional intimacy are for marriageLips that drip honey — speech as smooth as oilAll you will have for your spouse are part of your heart and used body parts.Fool talking — fool who listens
Question of Proverbs: Do you believe that God knows best?
Faith — Does God know what he is talking about? There’s nothing that pleases God more than a (young) person turning his/her back on the world and, by faith, believing that God’s ways are best.HardThe world fights against you — Holy Spirit will fight for youThe world will ridicule you — God delights in youThe world will not accept you — God will accept you (“well done”)
