- 2. Exodus 20:8-11 NIV Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.

- This was six weeks before the ten commands were given. Just after the exodus from Egypt.Heb. shabat does not mean "seventh". It means "rest".Not necessarily the first occurrence of a Sabbath observance.Scholars suggest that there was no Sabbath observance until Moses. - First, a command to labor for six days.Work is not a curse. - I'm not saying we should come to church on Saturday, nor that we should make Saturday holy. Rather, I'm saying that when we threw out the Sabbath, we also threw out the principle for which it stood.The early Christians did not meet on the seventh day - for good reason: Jesus was in the grave on the seventh day.Rather, they met on the first day - the day Jesus came out of the grave triumphant.They changed the practice, but not the principle.The Bible calls the first day of the week the "Lord's Day". We treat it more like it is our day than his.We need to rethink our attitudes about the Lord's Day.
- We need a time for re-identification.We need a reminder to ourselves and others that we have a unique relationship with God.Such a reminder is found in the fact that we spend the day differently than they do.The Lord's Day is a reminder of who we are and whose we are.
- 2. We need a time of re-dedication.The Lord's Day is devoted to a remembrance of what God has done.People often say: "Sunday is my only day to ... (rest, go to the mountains, go to the river, work around the house, go to sporting events, etc.). Is it really my day, or is it the Lord's?It's a shame that one hour is about all we can stand of the Lord on his day. The Bible doesn't call it the "Lord's morning" or the "Lord's hour". It calls it the "Lord's Day".The entire day needs to be devoted to remembering what he has done for us and re-dedicating ourselves to him.
- 3. We need time for recreation.It can be holy to do things that recharge us on the Lord's Day. There is nothing wrong with fellowship, meals, working in the yard, or recreation. All these things can be designed to refocus our spiritual and physical energies.David Davenport made a speech one time suggesting that we should spend a day a week on supply, and not spend all our time on demand.We ought to be refreshed on Monday because we spent Sunday honoring the Lord.
- Prayer: Help us honor you on your day. Remembrance, re-dedication, recreation, recharge energies. Cope with the struggles of the past week & the trials of the week ahead. Help us to focus on you.Invitation: Restlessness is a spiritual problem. Its roots are in sin. The remedy for restlessness is Jesus, who promises us rest.
