High and low string parts are symmetrical for the greatest ease in teaching and creating a solid performance sound. Percussion instruments can always be added to double the string rhythms; hand drums, tambourine and/or claves would be most appropriate. African Song and Roundarr. Folowing this "explosive" event, the piece has an upbeat rhythmic groove that propels the piece forward to a hauntingly beautiful quiet section, followed by a furious drive to the end. Supernova could easily be the hit of your musical season, and definitely take your orchestra to new musical heights. Supernova Michael Hopkins UIL Grade 3
Symphonia No. 4 in D Major (for String Orchestra) William Herschel/arr. Lynne Latham This work is an energetic introduction to "Sturm und Drang" style written by the father of modern astronomy. Dotted rhythms, hooked bowings, and detailed attention to dynamic changes allow for many opportunities to work on fundamentals. Chromatic fingerings are a must: Violin 1 uses third position, and all other parts use extensions. UIL Grade 3
Symphony No. 16 {III. Finale}Franz Joseph Haydn/arr. Sandra Dackow This intermediate arrangement for string orchestra captures the robust Finale to Haydn's Symphony #16. The parts can be played entirely in first position, with the exception of the bass part, which requires some second and third position notes. Optional shifts are marked in all parts where shifting makes the passages actually easier to play. Though celebrated for having written over 100 symphonies, Haydn's real accomplishment was in giving each and every one of these works a distinct musical personality. This finale is boisterous and joyful. Symphony No. 16 III. Finale UIL Grade 3
To Tame the Raging Rapids Brian Balmages Exhilarating and daring, this work describes mankind's constant fascination with some of the most powerful forces in nature. As it opens, the beauty of the water and its sound calms the listener. Soon, however, we plunge into the water and test ourselves against the "raging rapids." Highly rhythmic and compelling, this piece is destined to thrill all who perform it. Can your orchestra "tame the untamable?" To Tame the Raging Rapids UIL Grade 3
Toccata Johann Pachelbel/arr. Lloyd Conley Most commonly known for his famous Canon in D, Johann Pachelbel was an organ virtuoso and composed many works, including several toccatas. This toccata has been carefully adapted for strings into the key of D, with some added dynamics, but with the original tempo variations and ornamentation preserved. An ideal teaching and performance piece. UIL Grade 3
Two English Voluntaries Battishill & Travers/arr. Rick England This composition is put together the way one might construct a meal; that is to say, from different sources but the ingredients are selected to be complimentary. Complimentary movements allow us to explore legato technique, shape and phrase endings in the earnest Andante while the Allegro is all about fun with technique and includes some opportunities for dialogue between the violin parts. UIL Grade 3
Winter Solstice Todd Parrish This fresh, new work describes the wonder and adventure of the winter season. All sections alternate between both melody and accompaniment throughout, while staying mainly in first position. The viola part is particularly interesting with important accompanying ostinati. You will enjoy adding this lively piece to your winter, holiday concert or festival repertoire. UIL Grade 3
American West Tim Shackelton American West captures a musical vision of the vastness, grandeur, and scenic beauty of the once "last frontier" in the United States. To realize the full potential of the composition, the director and instrumentalist should recall the storied and colorful history that made the American West unique. UIL Grade 4 (Full Orchestra)
Bagatelle (Op. 47, No. 5) Antonin Dvorak/arr. Robert Sieving Charming! This light and flowing arrangement maintains the rhythmic drive characteristic of Slavic folk music. UIL Grade 4
A canzona is an intensly polyphonic form where each musical line imitates and echoes another. Your students will gain independance and listening skills by playing this Renaissance composition from the early 1600's. Extremely popular with brass players, this piece was originally composed for strings. Your students will feel the magic of making a remarkable piece of early music come alive! This exciting Grade 4 piece in the contemporary style is loosely based, both melodically and harmonically, on the semitones A-Bb and E-F. Rhythmic opening and closing sections are contrasted by a lyrical central section. This piece serves as a good introduction to contemporary sounds, and will be an impressive addition to any concert program. Commissioned by the Sachem Central School district at Holbrook, NY to commemorate the reconfiguration of High School North. Dance & Meditation John Caponegro Dance & Meditation UIL Grade 4

Legend, Op. 59, No. 6 Antonin Dvorak/arr. Robert Sieving Adhering closely to the original four-hand piano version, this arrangement retains the beautifully lyrical lines which offer the student orchestra the opportunity to concentrate on bow control and the development of left-hand tonal warmth. The split cello part adds lush sonorities while all parts remain interestingly involved in the primary melodic material. UIL Grade 4
MadrigaleKarl Bohm/arr. Robert Sieving This lovely German song offers the opportunity to teach compound meter, isolating excerpts collaterally with rhythmic exercises, and working on smooth string crossings. Extended positions are featured in the cello part with accidentals sprinkled throughout the other parts as well. A beautiful soli section will be popular with cellists against a moving bass line. UIL Grade 4
My Spirit Be Joyful from Cantata No. 146J.S. Bach/arr. David Giardinier Sure to become a standard! This beautiful transcription keeps the original key of the work and all string lines intact, with some revoicing of the oboe parts to preserve Bach's counterpoint. The meter has been changed from 3/8 to 3/4 time, allowing for greater accessibility with student musicians, and the string bass line has been realized from the continuo part with minor alterations in the more virtuosic passages. UIL Grade 4
Few choral pieces of the last twenty-five years have achieved greater or more deserved renown than this setting of the ancient O Magnum Mysterium text. The idiosyncratic but firmly tonal harmony and soaring melodic writing of this wonderful piece have been skillfully adapted for the string orchestra. If you are looking for an alternative to the Barber Adagio, you need look no further. O Magnum MysteriumMorton Lauridsen/arr. Sandra Dackow UIL Grade 4
October Eric Whitacre/arr. Paul Lavender The continuing popularity of Eric Whitacre's dramatic and evocative music is evident in concert programming everywhere, with his symphonic, choral, and operatic works. Overture to Joseph (for String Orchestra) Georg Frideric Handel/arr. Phillip Clark A beautiful E-minor Andante with ornaments and dotted rhythms leads to an Allegro with scale-passage work for everyone. A rather disjunctive theme in the Allegro teaches good bowing skills and offers a wonderful opportunity for a Baroque style lesson. Upper strings will shift to third position and lower strings to fourth. UIL Grade 4
Riveting! Take a journey with the legendary hero Perseus in this dynamic and stunning symphonic work as he slays the snake-haired Medusa and rescues the princess Andromeda. From the opening rhythmic figures to the soaring melodies, this piece will command the attention of your audience and plunge them into a whirlwind of adventure! PerseusSoon HeeNewbold UIL Grade 4
Prayer for Peace John Williams A hauntingly beautiful melody becomes the dramatic focal point of this powerful work for strings by the master of cinema music, John Williams. Once again, the brilliant writing creates an emotional and sensitive backdrop for the film, but works just as effectively when presented in a concert setting. UIL Grade 4
Rosa Mundi Paul Lewis "Whilst composing this piece to assuage the sadness of parting from a loved one, a single flower of my favourite rose blossomed in my garden -- the only one to do so that year." --P.Lewis UIL Grade 4

Symphony No. 3 in G Major {I. Allegro}Franz Joseph Haydn/arr. Sandra Dackow The first movement of this early work shows Haydn's fondness for themes which spin from four long notes, surrounded by counterpoint in other voices. This intermediate arrangement for string orchestra requires some shifting for first violin and bass, while second violin, viola and cello can be played entirely in first position. Symphony No. 3 in G Major I. Allegro UIL Grade 4
Symphony No. 32 in C Major: Finale Franz Joseph Haydn/arr. Sandra Dackow From the finale to one of Haydn's earlier symphonies, this piece will dance if the right lilt is captured. Symphony No. 32 in C Major Finale UIL Grade 4
Symphony No. 44 "Trauer" (4th Movement) Franz Joseph Haydn/arr. Todd Parrish Celebrate Haydn's 200th anniversary with this outstanding symphony! This exciting and energetic work is a rare example of Haydn's use of the minor tonality in symphonic writing, which is aptly subtitled "Trauer," translated "Mourning." The string parts are very close to the original with changes made only to accommodate the important lines of the original oboe and horn parts. Students will thoroughly enjoy the contrapuntal style allowing simultaneous independent melodies. Some shifting is required through third position for violins and fourth position for cellos and basses. UIL Grade 4

A Very English Music (for String Orchestra) Paul Carr Written in a particularly “English” vein. Cuckmere Haven is a beautiful vista on the Sussex coast, and the music here represents a favored area for walking and meditating. The nostalgic Cornish Air commemorates the composer’s birthplace, while The Hunt Gathering depicts a very English Event: a Boxing Day Hunt in the village of Laycock. Its splendid vibrancy creates a melodious pictorial of an enthusiastic crowd of supporters and onlookers, who cheer as the hunt is set off in a blaze of finery and excitement. UIL Grade 4
Winton Suite (for String Orchestra) Adam Carse Reissued by popular demand, Winton Suite stands worthily beside more familiar pieces for string orchestra such as Elgar's Serenade and Parry's Lady Radnor Suite. It is a five-movement work in a vigorous classical form that balances stirring fast music with lyrical, reflective passages. UIL Grade 4

Prelude (for String Orchestra) Gerald Finzi Originally conceived in the 1920s as the opening movement of a (subsequently uncompleted) chamber symphony, to be entitled The Bud, the Blossom and the Berry, the Prelude nevertheless stands convincingly as an independent piece. The music has a compelling forward drive, building to a concluding climax of power and expectancy, as the prevailing minor key breaks into the radiant warmth of the major. UIL Grade 5
Praeludium(Allegro comodo) • Air (Adagio, ma non troppo) • Intermezzo (Allegretto grazioso) • Romanze(Andante con moto) • Gavotte (Allegro deciso). The five parts of the Serenade are reconstituted movements taken from Foote’s earlier Suite No. 1, Op. 12, and his Suite No. 2, Op 21. The tonalities outline the E minor triad. Amiable tunes that are finely-suited to strings, well-ordered rhythms, and telling harmonies are hallmarks to Foote’s writing for this genre. Serenade in E Major, Op. 25 Arthur Foote UIL Grade 5
Sinfonia for Strings Eric Ewazen Composed by Eric Ewazen in 2009, Sinfonia for Strings is a challenging yet musically rewarding composition designed to showcase great virtuosity and legato lyricism. The music is unique in that it is written to display a degree of difficulty in the bass section not often seen in string orchestra music. UIL Grade 5
Suite in E Major, Op. 63 Arthur Foote Praeludium(Allegro comodo) • Pizzicato and Adagietto(Capriccioso allegretto) • Fugue (Allegro giusto). Praeludium has great breadth and variety of expression; Pizzicato and Adagio is actually a three-section movement of contrasts; the Fugue is built from an Allegro giusto E minor subject. UIL Grade 5
