WHAT MAKES A GOOD TEAM
BUILDING ?
From a personal point of view I think that the
best team building should have an element of
pampering to it and if not quite as deluxe as a spa day
then at least to be ‘a relaxing, bonding experience’. The
boot camp experience has its place but I would prefer
to do something that you look forward to rather than
dread. I recently saw the Snow Center in Hemel
Hempstead which has indoor slopes where it snows 3
times a week – I thought that would be fun for a team
building day if budgets didn't cover a ski incentive!
Otherwise I think cookery days are great.
As to what makes a good team building event I
agree that organization is key and it doesn't work if
there is too much waiting around for your turn or for
others to take their turn. The main aim has to be that
people come away feeling more motivated and/or more
in tune with their teammates. How that's achieved in a
directed way is the tricky part.

10. BUCHAREST
Bucharest is Romania's capital and largest city, as well as the
most important industrial and commercial center of the country.
With 2 million inhabitants in the city proper and more than 2.4
million in the urban area. Bucharest is the second largest city in
South Eastern Europe behind Athens.
Bucharest is the primary entry point into Romania. It typically
elicits a wide spectrum of opinions on the part of tourists. Known in
the past as "The Little Paris" Bucharest has changed a lot lately and
today it has become a very interesting mix of old and new that has
little to do with its initial reputation. Finding a 300 years old church
near a steel-and-glass building that sit both next to a communist
style building is common place in Bucharest. Perhaps "The Big
Mix" would be a more appropriate name for the current Bucharest.
Bucharest offers some excellent attractions, and has, in recent years,
cultivated a sophisticated, trendy, and modern sensibility that many
have come to expect from a European capital.

11. BRASOV
Fringed by the peaks of the Southern Carpathian Mountains and
resplendent with gothic, baroque and renaissance architecture, as
well as a wealth of historical attractions, Brasov is one of the most
visited places in Romania.
Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1211 on an ancient Dacian
site and settled by the Saxons as one of the seven walled citadels,
Brasov exudes a distinct medieval ambiance and has been used as
backdrop in many recent period films.
The location of the city at the intersection of trade routes linking
the Ottoman Empire and western Europe, together with certain tax
exemptions, allowed Saxon merchants to obtain considerable wealth
and exert a strong political influence in the region. This was
reflected in the city's German name, Kronstadt, as well as in its
Latin name, Corona, meaning Crown City (hence, the coat of arms
of the city which is a crown with oak roots). Fortifications were
erected around the city and continually expanded, with several
towers maintained by different craft guilds, according to medieval
custom.
Stroll around the old Town Hall Square (Piata Sfatului) where you
can admire colorfully painted and ornately trimmed baroque
structures. Take a peek inside the Black Church (Biserica Neagra),
the largest gothic church in Romania.
Nearby are towering mountains, rolling fields, thick forests and
villages with fortified churches.

12. SIBIU
Sibiu (Hermannstadt in German) was the largest and wealthiest of
the seven walled citadels* built in the 12th century by German
settlers known as Transylvanian Saxons. The riches amassed by its
guilds paid for the construction of both impressive buildings and the
fortifications required to protect them.
Sibiu’s Old Town retains the grandeur of its earlier days when rich
and powerful guilds dominated regional trade. Like Sighisoara and
Brasov, it has a distinctly Germanic feeling. Sections of the medieval
wall still guard the historic area, where narrow streets pass steep-
roofed 17th century buildings with gable overhangs before opening
into vast, church-dominated squares such as Great Square and Little
Square.
* The seven walled citadels populated by the Saxons of
Transylvania were known in German as the Siebenburgen.
The other Siebenburgen citadels are located in the towns of:
Bistrita (Bistritz), Brasov (Kronstadt), Cluj (Klausenburg), Medias
(Mediasch), Sebes (Mühlbach) , Sighisoara (Schässburg)

13. BRAN
Surrounded by an aura of mystery and legend and perched high
atop a 200-foot-high rock, Bran Castle owes its fame to its imposing
towers and turrets as well as to the myth created around Bram
Stocker’s Dracula.
Although Stoker never visited Transylvania, the Irish author relied
on research and his vivid imagination to create the dark and
intimidating stomping ground of Count Dracula, leading to
persistent myths that it was once the home of Vlad Tepes, ruler of
Walachia. While the association with Dracula is sketchy at best, the
castle continues to hold a strong attraction for all fans of the Count.
BIERTAN
The village of Biertan (German: Birthalm), first mentioned in an
official document in 1283, is home to one of the largest and most
impressive medieval strongholds in Transylvania.
Surrounded by quaint streets and vineyards, the 15th century
fortified church at Biertan is perched high on a hill in the middle of
the village. Three tiers of 35-foot-high defensive walls, connected by
towers and gates, encircled the complex, making the church
impossible to conquer during medieval times.
Featuring late-gothic architecture with heavy doors and double
exterior walls, the church boasts the largest Transylvanian multi-
paneled wooden altar and a remarkable wooden door which once
protected the treasures in the sacristy.

14. SIGHISOARA
Transylvania is also home to the exquisite medieval town of
Sighisoara, a perfectly intact 15th century gem with nine towers,
narrow passageways and cobbled streets, burgher houses and ornate
churches. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sighisoara is also the
birthplace of Vlad Draculea, nicknamed Vlad the Impaler (Vlad
Tepes), ruler of Walachia from 1456 to 1462. It was Vlad who
inspired Bram Stoker’s fictional creation, Count Dracula. His house
is just one of many attractions here.
SINAIA
Nestled at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains in the picturesque
town of Sinaia, Peles Castle is a masterpiece of German new-
Renaissance architecture, considered by many one of the most
stunning castles in Europe.
Commissioned by King Carol I in 1873 and completed in 1883, the
castle served as the summer residence of the royal family until 1947.
Its 160 rooms are adorned with the finest examples of European art,
Murano crystal chandeliers, German stained-glass windows and
Cordoba leather-covered walls.

15. HUNEDOARA
The greatest Gothic-style castle in Romania, Corvinesti was built
by the Anjou family on the site of a former Roman camp. The castle
served as a fortress until the mid-14th century when it became the
residence of Transylvania's ruler, Iancu de Hunedoara. Iancu
upgraded the fortress transforming it into the most stunning castle
in Transylvania.
The beautifully preserved structure features a sumptuous Knights’
Hall, an impressive drawbridge, high buttresses, inner courtyards, a
chapel and some 50 rooms resplendent with medieval art. The
courtyard features a 100 ft. well dug into stone.
IASI
Iasi is the most important political, economic and cultural centre
of the province of Moldavia as well as one of the oldest cities in
Romania. Located in the northeastern part of the country, Iasi was
for many centuries the crossing point of the most important
commercial routes linking Poland, Hungary, Russia and
Constantinople.
Deeply rooted in history, Iasi has been the main centre of
Moldavian culture since 1408. The city prides itself with publishing
the first Romanian newspaper and establishing the first Romanian
university. Today, Iasi is home to five universities.

16. TARGU JIU
A former Roman settlement, the city of Targu Jiu lies at the
foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, on the banks of the river Jiu.
Inhabited since Paleolithic times, the region of western Oltenia was
of strategic importance to the Romans. The area provided direct
access, through one of the most spectacular passes in the
Carpathians, to present-day Transylvania, the heart of the former
Dacian Kingdom.
Constantin Brancusi, one of the most influential modern sculptors
of the 20th century, was born near Targu Jiu, in Hobita. Although he
lived and worked for most of his life in Paris, his legacy is also
preserved in Romania, in the city of Targu Jiu.
ALBA IULIA
One of the oldest settlements in Romania, known in ancient time
as Apulum, Alba Iulia served as the largest military and economic
center during the Roman occupation. Temples, mosaics, thermae
and statues, amphitheaters, the governor's palace "Daciarum
Trium" – all rendered the original Dacian Apulul as the miniature
copy of the mother Rome.

17. TULCEA (Danube Delta)
The city of Tulcea, laid out on seven hills like Rome, has been an
important harbor since ancient times. Founded in the 7th century
BC by the Dacians, Aegyssus, as the city was known in antiquity,
was conquered by the Romans who rebuilt it after their plans, their
technique and architectural vision. Aegussyus was first mentioned in
the documents of Diodorus of Sicily (3rd century BC).
The town was successively under Byzantine (5th - 7th century),
Genoese (10th - 13th century) and Ottoman rule before finally being
reunited with Romania in 1878.
CONSTANTA (Black Sea)
The third largest city in Romania, Constanta is now an important
cultural and economic centre, worth exploring for its archaeological
treasures and the atmosphere of the old town centre. Its historical
monuments, ancient ruins, grand Casino, museums and shops, and
proximity to beach resorts make it the focal point of Black Sea coast
tourism. Open-air restaurants, nightclubs and cabarets offer a wide
variety of entertainment.
