75 Years of Industry Experience
In 1937, Edwin F. Averyt and J. Clifton Judy started Mutual Accident Company in Columbia, South Carolina and sold their first product – accidental death coverage. Their first sales team was comprised of mostly local women. They could relate to the struggles others were going through and talk with them about their financial protection needs.
In 1939, the company became Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company. The mission then was the same as it is today – to help America’s workers preserve and protect the vitally important things they work so hard to build.
We’ve continued to evolve over the years:
• In 1955, we introduced worksite marketing of voluntary benefits through payroll deduction, and that first payroll deduction account remains a Colonial Life customer to this day.
• In the 1970s, we implemented computer technology long before most companies did.
• In the 1980s, we began marketing our products through Section 125 and introduced electronic enrollment capabilities nationwide.
• In the 2000s, we created our online enrollment system.
Today, we continue to add innovative enrollment technologies and options. After 75 years of business, we remain dedicated to our mission of finding ways to help America’s workers when they face unexpected events and challenging times.
Headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina, we offer a wide range of financial protection options, helping more than 3 million people in nearly 80,000 companies. In addition to our personal benefits counseling expertise, we’re a pioneer of payroll deduction and innovator of enrollment technology. Our end-to-end capabilities and commitment to going above and beyond enable us to provide unmatched customer service.

We talked a little earlier about how important it is to have a good understanding of your benefits – and how hard it can be.Colonial Life believes all working Americans deserve to understand and appreciate the benefits they have available to them through the workplace. By doing so, we enable businesses to build a more loyal and satisfied workforce and, ultimately, a stronger business. To help provide the communications employees need, we have an entire system to help us through all phases of a benefits enrollment – before, during and after. We have all the tools we need to help us customize benefit communications for an employer, help educate and enroll his employees, and to help summarize the enrollment results.
We take our responsibility seriously…and we can prove it! After our 1-to-1 meetings, we ask employees to rate our personalized benefits counseling experience and their level of understanding about their benefits.Helping employees decide about their benefits is a big responsibility, and we want to be held accountable, as demonstrated by our Benefits Counselor Code. So far, we’re doing pretty well! Based on the survey results for our 1-to-1 counseling sessions in 2012, we had great results:(review stats on slide). And…98% said it was important to have a 1-to-1 benefits counseling session annually. That means two things to you:1. This says again that we are not in our business to sell; we’re in the business to counsel and help employees better understand their benefits.2. Employees – and therefore their employers – value benefits communication, which provides great potential for us.
As a member of Colonial Life’s sales team, you can enjoy high advance commissions, bonuses and renewal commissions. You can also qualify for great prizes through our sales contests – andfantastic trips by meeting our sales conference qualifications.Past conferences have included Hawaii, the Bahamas, Mexico, and cruises to Alaska and the Mediterranean.Because we’ll celebrate Colonial Life’s 75th Anniversary in 2014, we have an even more special trip planned – a cruise to France, Italy and Monaco.Let’s take a look!Click the circle to start the Leaders Conference video..
As with any strong organization, Colonial Life looks for high-energy sales people with a growth mindset, and looks to promote qualified management candidates from within.Click on each circle for description of that role.
