On 29thOctober 2013 Microsoft announced search innovations that included Cross Site Publishing and Content Search webpartare available in SharePoint Online
Search driven publishing features are only available for private site collections :
Not available in Public site collections
The search driven publishing features are available in the Office 365 Enterprise E3and Office 365 Enterprise E4plans

Authoring Site Collection :
Content is created in list and libraries shared as Catalogs
Search :
Search system crawls the content and builds search Index
In the search index, site columns are “transformed” into managed properties
Site column values are “transformed” into managed property values.
Publishing Sites :
Add one or more Search Web Parts to the site collections where you want to display your catalog content
The Search Web Parts use display templates that specify which managed property values should be displayed
