We "decommissioned" a choir robe first purchased in 1972 for the A Cappella Choir at Samford University. I thought it would be fun to write a "liturgy of decommission" and use it a choir alumni event on October 29, 2011 - Samford's Homecoming.
3. Leader: We come today to
honor the legacy of the Samford
University Choir Robe.
Choir and Alumni:
You have beautifully adorned
your choir for 39 years.
4. Leader: We are sorry that we
couldn’t make it an even 40
years.
Choir and Alumni:
But not that sorry.
5. Leader: Today, we celebrate
your longevity and stamina.
Choir and Alumni:
39 years is a very long time.
6. Leader: You have survived
decades of travel, tours, bus
trips.
Choir and Alumni:
With you, we have created
beautiful music and lasting
memories.
7. Leader: Four conductors have
led you in song.
Choir and Alumni:
We honor their work with you.
8. Leader: You have accompanied
thousands of our songs.
Choir and Alumni:
Tens of thousands have
witnessed you with us.
9. Leader: You were our constant
companion.
Choir and Alumni:
And you kept us warm on the
coldest days.
10. Leader: You made us hot on the
warmer days.
Choir and Alumni:
So hot. So hot. So hot.
11. Leader: And now ye stinketh.
Choir and Alumni:
And your hems are frayed.
12. Leader: You are stained.
Choir and Alumni:
And we don’t remember how
that happened.
13. Leader: Today, we say goodbye
to you.
Choir and Alumni:
And thank you for your
service.
