Being a developer for years its very easy to get type-cast. You become "The CodeIgniter Guy", the one dev in the office that knows how FooCMS works or just end up farming out CRUD day after day. Well I decided to say "nope" to that & accepted a job where I'd need to know how to do…everything. This talk aims to give you an overview of what you should be looking to learn next if you want to stop being "just a developer" & move into the devops/architecture arena.

I've been building APIs for a long time now and it is becoming ever more common for server-side developer thanks to the rise of front-end JavaScript frameworks, iPhone applications and generally API-centric architectures. On one hand you're just grabbing stuff from a data source and shoving it out as JSON, but surviving changes in business logic, database schema updates, new or deprecated etc gets super difficult. This talk will outline the common pitfalls developers get trapped in when building APIs and outline methods to avoid them, including naming stuff badly then having to rename everything, when and how to use POST/PUT/PATCH, data structures, DDoSing yourself because pagination, picking your authentication system and all sorts of other stuff.

In 2009 the PHP-FIG created PSR-0: an autoloading standard that helped to change the landscape of PHP forever, thanks in no small part to its integration with Composer. Well, PSR-0 was built in a land before PHP had namespaces, when Horde and PEAR were prevalent and Composer was but a twinkle in the eye of two developers. In December 2013 PSR-4 was released as a newer, shinier version of that standard. The FIG has more standards happening, some of which may be out just in time for this talk.
