3. Aim of the thesis
The main goal of the work:
to develop a prototype user interface that allows
to control mobile devices using the signals
received by the MindWave Mobile Headset
recording electrical activity of the brain.

4. Brain-Computer Interface
Brain-Computer Interface (BCI):
a direct communication pathway
between the brain and an external device.
BCIs are often directed at assisting, augmenting,
or repairing human cognitive or sensory-motor
functions.

5. Development tools and technologies
• Hardware
– NeuroSky Mindwave Mobile Headset
– Mobile phone with Android OS
• Software
– Java and Android SDK
– ThinkGear library
– Android Studio IDE

6. Prototype applications
Applications created during the work:
• EEG Analyzer
• EEG Controller

7. Experiments
• EEG Analyzer: used to test connection between
BCI and mobile device as well as recording
brain activity in a defined time interval
• EEG Controller: used to test interaction
between user and devices in:
– Different scenarios
– Different time of the day
– Different software configuration
• Required attention level was changed several times
• Option switching method was changed several times

8. Data analysis
• User can be focused and relaxed at the same
time
• User keeps focus at 50% or 60% of his
possibility during the day
• Required focus should be set to at least 70%,
but should not be too high (e.g. 95%)
• Tiredness of the user can influence
interaction, so he/she should be fresh
while using BCI for executing operations

9. Summary and conclusions
• Interaction between BCI and mobile devices
is possible
• User can control mobile devices with activity of
his brain
• Interaction between BCI and mobile devices
has many limitations
• Interaction with BCI depends on external factors
like tiredness of the user and his specific ability
to keep focus
• Further investigations and research may improve
user experience and possibilites of BCI
