TYPES OF DIABETES


TYPE - I DIABETES
This condition develops mostly
in children and young adults; it
is an auto immune disorder. In
this, the beta cells present in
pancreas, which are
responsible for producing
insulin are destroyed. There is
less or no secretion of insulin.

TYPE - II DIABETES
This is the most
common type of
diabetes. In this, the
pancreas secretes insulin but
the body is not capable to
use it properly. This may take
a long period to develop.

GESTATIONAL DIABETESGestational diabetes- this
type of diabetes develops
during pregnancy. Usually
it disappears after delivery.
The mother is at risk of
getting diabetes in later
age.

THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES ARE
Excessive production or passage of urine (polyuria)
Excessive thirst(Polydipsia)

Increased appetite(polyphagia)

AYURVEDA & DIABETES

Since the Vedic period, Ayurveda
recognizes diabetes with the name
Prameha.
In Ayurvedic classical texts, Prameha
is the term used for the group of
symptoms such as increase of urine
with or without increasing
frequency of urination. The
characteristic symptoms seen in all
types of prameha are polyurea and
turbidity in urine.

DIABETES & MADHUMEHA

Madhumeha is categorized as ‘Yapya
disease’ (incurable) in Ayurveda.
 In term Madhumeha, ‘madhu’ literally
means ‘Honey’ same as in diabetes
mellitus where ‘mellitus ’in Latin means
‘Honey’.
Both Diabetes Mellitus and
Madhumeha implicates metabolic
disorders therefore Madhumeha can be
compared with Diabetes.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF DIABETES

Charaka classified diabetic patients according to
their constitution as
Non–obese diabetic (Krusha)
Obese diabetic (Sthula Pramehi)
In the medicine texts of Ayurveda, prameha is of
4 major types.
 Vataj prameha ( 10 sub types)
 pittaj prameha( 6 sub types)
 Kaphaj prameha ( 4 sub types)
 Juvenile diabetes (due to unhealthy practices of
parents and/or due to sins of past-birth)

RESPONSIBLE FACTORS OF PREMEHA

Congenital factors (Sahaja prameha)this type corresponds to juvenile onset
of diabetes. Caused due to defects in
maternal or paternal genes. Can be
correlated with type I diabetes.
Improper diet habits (Apathya
nimittaja prameha )

ETIOLOGICAL FACTORS

The main etiological factors responsible for prameha are an
abnormality in the body tissues such as body fat (medas),
muscles (mansa), agni (digestive fire) and muscle fat (vasa).
Foods and lifestyle that increases
kapha (watery energy of cohesion),
medas (fat) and mootra (urine) are
responsible for it

Aggravating Factors

Foods and lifestyle that increases kapha

Incurable (Asadhya) all types of vataja

According to classical texts of Ayurveda, all
pramehas have the potential to become
incurable (madhumeha) if left untreated.

of Tinospora cordifolia. Powder
them; take one teaspoon twice a day
with water empty stomach.
