3. Reading Strategies
Reading Strategies – plans for solving problems
encountered in constructing meaning
Why learn reading strategies?
1)Strategies help to improve reading
comprehension as well as efficiency in reading
2)By using strategies, you will read in the way that
expert readers do
3)Strategies help readers to process the text
actively, to monitor comprehension, and to connect
what they are reading to their own knowledge and to
other parts of the text
4. PREDICT
- Check headlines, look for key words and
guess what the text will be about
e.g. – Statistics…… what kind of statistics?
CLARIFY
- If you don’t understand something, reread,
look for clues
e.g. – Aged 16 and over… does that include
16 year olds?
6. ASK QUESTIONS
-Interact with the material
e.g. – How many British people are common
law?
MAKE CONNECTIONS
-Connect the material to your prior knowledge
e.g. – I know the divorce rate in Korea is
much higher.
7. SUMMARIZE
