How Do You Deal With Stress As a Caregiver
If you are now a health professional, there isn't any dearth of pressure in your lifetime. Caring for
family members or friends can be (and normally is) physically, emotionally, financially, spiritually,
and psychosocially trying. "Relaxing" rarely makes it on the listing of things to do for most health
professionals. So, instead of dancing round the problem of pressure and expecting things will get
better, let's spend some time now stressing tension.
What do I mean by stress? Stress is our response to a destabilizing force in life. Whatever upsets the
tenuous equilibrium of life is so perceived as nerve-racking. Perhaps a picture would be useful.
Picture enjoying a lovely day on your pond of tranquility. Composed winds. Smooth waters. Blue
skies and sunlight. And a huge boulder falls out of the blue into your pond. WHAM! Your world is
rocking and rolling. Smooth sailing is a matter of the past--a distant memory. Today, you should find
out the way to drive the waves. Trying? Absolutely!
I think it is fair to say that illness and aging often qualify as "boulders" in life--sources of stress,
wave generators. This past week an affecting PBS documentary, covered families find a way to deal
with the ripple effects of caregiving. The documentary depicts the journey respectfully and sensibly.
The caregivers interviewed were devoted to caring for their loved ones, often giving their particular
health and well being in the method. The families discussed the crushing fiscal costs of care in
addition to other notable prices: employment concerns, divorce, psychological and physical misery,
strained sib relationships, and role shifts. Each family shared a unique storyline of caregiving.
However, every family struggled with all the worldwide strains of caregiving. Stress and caregiving
go hand-in-hand. Common ground. Common concerns. Common cause.
The PBS documentary functions as a call to action for families and people. Caregiving is trying-
-that's the reality. Furthermore, anxiety is magnified due to poor planning and lack of resources. We
aren't clairvoyant! As human beings, we have to acknowledge plan and our finitude for our ultimate
decline and demise. Before a medical care catastrophe drops into your pond of tranquility, discuss
the different facets of caregiving with your family members and friends --who, what, when, where,
why, and how. It is possible to work collectively to manage also to mitigate the pressures related to
caring for each other by so doing. Being realistic about the journey of being prepared and caregiving
enables us to keep a balance between the burdens and also the blessings of caring for our loved
ones. Thus, instead of being stressed, let's stress the necessity to organize to attention!
