8. OPERATIONS STRATEGY
‘Just In Time' manufacturing is what we are considering because of
following reasons:-
It consists of allowing the entire production process to be regulated by the
natural laws of supply and demand.
Customer demand stimulates production of a vehicle. In turn the
production of the vehicle stimulates production and delivery of the
necessary parts and so on.
The result is that the right parts and materials are manufactured and
provided in the exact amount needed - and when and where they are needed.
Under 'just in time' the ultimate arbiter is always the customer.
rives for the absolute elimination of waste, overburden and unevenness in
all areas to allow members to work smoothly and efficiently
The foundations are built on standardisation to ensure a safe method of
operation and a consistent approach to quality.
This improves their standard processes and procedures in order to ensure
maximum quality, improve efficiency and eliminate waste. This is known as
kaizen and is applied to every sphere of the company's activities.
9. Cont…
• Engineers draw basic models using computer graphics.
• Clay models are made to be studied by experts and engineers
• Model is reviewed and feasibility is tested
• Tools to be used for manufacture are developed
• Car components are purchased from suppliers and assembled in assembly shop
• A frame is placed on the assembly line and clamped to the conveyor
• Automobile frame moves to component assembly area.
• Front & rear suspensions, gas tanks, rear axles and drive shafts, gear boxes,
steering box components, wheel drums and braking systems are sequentially
installed
10. • A simple four cylinder, twenty horsepower engine and a planetary
transmission giving two gears forward and backward
• The vehicle’s engine mates with its transmission
• Robots weld the floor pan pieces together and the radiator is attached
• The shell of the vehicle is built as the floor pan moves down the assembly line.
• Once the body shell is completed, it is attached to an overhead conveyor for
painting and inspection.
• Subsequent body components including fully assembled doors, deck lids,
hood panel, fenders, trunk lid and bumper reinforcements are installed.
• Complete inspection is done and the body is sent for final painting
11. • After the final coat of paint, the shell is carried by a conveyor through baking ovens
where the paint is cured at 275 degrees Farenheit (135 degree celsius)
• The painted shell moves through the internal assembly area for
instrumentation, wiring systems, dash panels, interior lights and other internal
components
• The chassis passes the body conveyor and the shell is lifted robotically from its
conveyor fixtures and placed onto the car frame.
• The car body is bolted to the frame.
• The automobile proceeds down the line to receive final trim components,
battery, tires, anti freeze and gasoline.
• The vehicle is driven to a checkpoint where its engine, lights, horn, charging
system and tires are audited.
