Know Your PC
An intro to the computing world
Priyanka Dey
What is a Computer ?
A computer is a device that takes an input, processes
the input data and then output the result. So
accordingly, it is made of input devices, a processing
unit and output devices.
Input Devices
( I/O Devices )
Processing Unit
(CPU)
Output Devices
(I/O Devices )
What is Hardware ?
To be simple :
!! Anything that you can touch in a computer !!
H/W is printer, cables, monitor, CPU, Keyboard,
mouse, CD, USB drives.Co-axial
cable
Ethernet
cable
Wireless
Router
CD
USB drive
Printer
Cable
What is Software ?
Something Virtual – like the songs stored in the CD.
Computer instructions or data. Anything that
can be stored electronically is software.
Operating System
An operating system, or "OS," is software that communicates with the hardware and
allows other programs to run. It is comprised of system software, or the fundamental
files your computer needs to boot up and function. Every desktop
computer, tablet, and smartphone includes an operating system that provides basic
functionality for the device. – To be simple – it is like the basic engine of the car.
Programs / Applications
An organized list of instructions that, when executed, causes the computer to
behave in a predetermined manner. Without programs, computers are useless.
Browsers
Word Processor Spread Sheet
Specs of a Computer - Memory
Memory / RAM – This is a fast internal memory which is
used to store information temporarily when the computer runs;
Generally more memory is good and makes the computer run
faster.
Specs of a Computer – CPU
CPU Speed – The speed of the central processing unit; it is
generally measured in Mega Herz. The higher the Mega Herz and
more latest generation the processor is the faster will be your
PC.
Specs of a Computer – Hard Disk
Hard Drive – This is storage area; Generally
nowadays they come as 600Gb, 750Gb and
1TB(Terabyte) etc. To estimate how much
space you need think of what are you going to
store – pictures, videos, songs or documents. In 1GB you can
approximately store 300 good quality pictures or a video of 45
minutes or 200 songs or a 1000 docs.
