2. What is a Computer ?
A computer is a device that takes an input, processes
the input data and then output the result. So
accordingly, it is made of input devices, a processing
unit and output devices.

3. What is Hardware ?

4. What is Software ?
Something Virtual – like the songs stored in the CD.
Computer instructions or data. Anything that
can be stored electronically is software.
5. Operating System
An operating system, or "OS," is software that communicates with the hardware and
allows other programs to run. It is comprised of system software, or the fundamental
files your computer needs to boot up and function. Every desktop
computer, tablet, and smartphone includes an operating system that provides basic
functionality for the device. – To be simple – it is like the basic engine of the car.
6. Programs / Applications
An organized list of instructions that, when executed, causes the computer to
behave in a predetermined manner. Without programs, computers are useless.

7. Specs of a Computer - Memory
Memory / RAM – This is a fast internal memory which is
used to store information temporarily when the computer runs;
Generally more memory is good and makes the computer run
faster.
8. Specs of a Computer – CPU
CPU Speed – The speed of the central processing unit; it is
generally measured in Mega Herz. The higher the Mega Herz and
more latest generation the processor is the faster will be your
PC.
9. Specs of a Computer – Hard Disk
Hard Drive – This is storage area; Generally
nowadays they come as 600Gb, 750Gb and
1TB(Terabyte) etc. To estimate how much
space you need think of what are you going to
store – pictures, videos, songs or documents. In 1GB you can
approximately store 300 good quality pictures or a video of 45
minutes or 200 songs or a 1000 docs.

11. Boot your PC
Booting your PC is turning it on.
Simply press the power button and your PC will go through the
boot sequence and load the OS. After which you will see a logon
screen.
12. Logging on
Once you see the logon screen click on the username and
enter your password and the OS will now load the desktop
where you can start using different programs.

14. Lets personalize the Desktop
Click on the start button on the left corner, then click on all
programs -> Accessories -> System Tools and then find Control
Panel. Once you click on it you will get the below window, from
where you can customize your computer settings.

Saver screen or you can choose an existing theme.

Once MS word program starts it will open a blank document like below. We
can start typing in the white space.

23. Filenames
Filenames has two parts –
<primary name> <dot> <Extension>
Example - training.doc
Primary name can be any name you want to give. The extension decides the type
of the file and is associated with the program. If you specify a different extension
you will not be able to open the file back until you associate it again with the
program.
Word docs will have extension of docx.
Excel docs will have extension of xlsx.

26. Aligning text in a document
This is a left aligned text. In order to
make the text left aligned, first high
light the text with your mouse and
then click on the icon that is left
aligned.

This is a center aligned text. In order
to make the text center aligned, first

27. Printing your word document
To print the document click on File menu and you will get the below screen; once you
are satisfied with the layout how it looks, clicking on the print button will send it to the
printer. Your printer obviously has to be preconfigured for this.
28. Let’s Practice
You need to logon to the computer, start the Microsoft word Program and
then type the document (as formatted) and print it.
29. The Internet - World Wide Web
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks. Different
computer behave as the server (think of the waitress in a restaurant) and you
are the client. You request an item and the server provides you that item and
luckily till now most of it is free.
