2. The following proposal looks to create a fansite in
support of the FOX comedy series: New Girl. This
fansite must effectively engage the show’s devoted
core audience, considering its demographics, needs
and expectations.
2
Objective
3. “After a bad break-up, Jess, an offbeat young woman, moves
into an apartment loft with three single men. Although they
find her behavior very unusual, the men support her… most
of the time.”
In other words: imagine Friends, but with one girl living with
the rest of the boys.

New Girl: An Introduction
4. Summary of Key Findings
4
• Show features characters with unique
personalities/style that share screen time.
• Each character engages with a different audience
segment. Fans bonds with certain characters.
• Fans, while engaged viewers, do not need to watch the
show live/immediately. Watched later on DVR/Hulu+.
• Repeat episode viewing less important than re-
watching individual scenes.
5. Summary of Key Findings
5
• Episode previews not desired; upcoming guest stars,
however, are of interest.
• Actor bios and past/upcoming projects also of interest
(as most of the show’s actors are largely unknown).
• Series would be purchased for additional content.
Theme song might be purchased.
• Only light engagement with show’s social media.
6. Fansite Recommendations
6
1. Proposed Game: Existing fansites use templated, self-
selected personality quizzes (such as, Which Character
are You?). Because of the show’s use of roommates and
their relationships, a more unique quiz would be Which
Character is Your Roommate?
Results would be sent to targeted friend/roommate,
syndicated through social media. A more viral approach,
this would encourage the target to take the same quiz
about the originator and/or other roommates, and help
connect past roommates.
7. Fansite Recommendations
7
2. Proposed Feature: Many of the storylines revolve
around relationships, and characters’ next boy/girlfriend.
Using the popular bracket-style tournament format, this
series of user polls would determine a fictional boyfriend
for the main characters (Jess/boyfriend, Nick/girlfriend).
As a fansite, candidates would be derived from any show,
from any time period…
For example, who would move on in the boyfriend
bracket, in a match-up between Peter Griffin (Family Guy)
and Sam (Cheers).
8. Fansite Recommendations
8
3. Proposed Feature: Many of the relationships involve
guest stars, with fan interest in who will next appear on
the show.
A series of polls would vote on the celebrity fans
expect/hope to appear next on the show. Might also give
odds, depending on overall user responses. Syndicated
through social media to initiate fan discussion.
9. Fansite Recommendations
9
4. Proposed Feature: The characters are uniquely styled,
and appeal to different audience segments.
A line-up of the characters, with fans able to upload their
own/friends’ faces onto the actors, to send around as a
visual meme. Fans might also swap in/swap around
different fashion choices.
10. Fansite Recommendations
10
5. Proposed Feature: The show is largely episodic, and
fans could collaborate in an interactive storyline.
Fans would have an online platform to develop an existing,
open-ended story--with guided choices or fan voting to
determine dialogue and plot turns. End result would be a
partially fan-developed script that could potentially air.
11. Fansite Recommendations
11
* Proposed Applet: Fans may have come across the show
from ads/friend recommendations, and may not know of
similar shows.
Using New Girl as a preferred show, a “Spotify”-style
approach to programs would put such shows into an
ongoing playlist, with fans able to “like” or “skip” a given
episode. Based on viewing practices, the feature would
“learn” more specific user preferences and serve more
engaging content.
12. Advertising Recommendations
12
1. Match.com: Appropriate, considering the nature of the
show about young roommates and their dating lives.
2. Mylife.com/Friendsreunited.com: Likewise, the show’s
roommate relationships can generate nostalgia for
one’s former roommates and living situations.
3. Online Apparel/Furniture: What the characters wear
(and the furniture in their loft) can influence and appeal
to fans. Characters are portrayed by young celebrities,
which may affect the style choices of the typical
audience, ages 16-35.
