Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome in Females
Women, Trauma, and PTSD
Injury is not unusual in women; five from ten women experience a traumatic event. Women tend to
see different injuries than guys. While both women and men report precisely the same symptoms of
posttraumatic stress disorder (hyperarousal, reexperiencing, avoidance, and numbing), some
symptoms are more common for girls or men.
History
Most early information on posttraumatic stress disorder and trauma originated from studies of men
Veterans, mainly Vietnam Veterans. Researchers found that ladies responses were comparable to
battle Veterans that were man and started to study the aftereffects of sex assault. Posttraumatic
stress disorder can be also caused by women's experiences of injury. This finding generated more
re-search on women's exposure to trauma and post-traumatic Understanding PTSD as a Spouse
stress disorder.
Sexual attack is more inclined to cause PTSD than a great many other occasions.
Women could be more inclined to blame themselves for injury experiences than men.
What goes on after injury
Following an injury, some girls start drinking or using drugs, may feel depressed, or develop post-
traumatic stress disorder. Women are a lot more than two times as likely to develop PTSD than men
(10% for girls and 4% for men). There are a couple of reasons men may not get more that are post-
traumatic stress disorder than women:
Women tend to be more likely to experience sexual assault.
Danger of experiencing trauma
Results from a big national mental-health study demonstrate that a bit more than half of all women
will encounter a minumum of one traumatic event in their own life. Women are somewhat less likely
to experience injury than guys. The most frequent injury for girls is child sex post traumatic stress
disorder abuse or sexual assault. About one in three women will experience a sexual assault in their
own life. Rates of sexual assault are higher for women than guys. Women are also more likely to
experience domestic violence or abused in childhood, to be neglected, or to possess a loved one
suddenly expire.
Why are some girls at higher risk for PTSD?
Maybe not all girls who experience a traumatic occasion develop PTSD. Women are far more likely
to develop PTSD if they:
Have a previous mental-health issue (for instance depression or anxiety)
Experienced an extremely critical or life threatening injury
Were sexually attacked
Were hurt during the occasion

Had a severe reaction at the period of the occasion
Experienced stressful occasions that were other afterward
Don't have social support that is good
What posttraumatic stress disorder is like for girls
Some PTSD symptoms are somewhat more prevalent in girls than guys. Girls tend to be more likely
to avoid things that remind them of the trauma bipolar than guys, to have more trouble feeling
emotions, and also to be jumpy. Guys are prone to feel angry and to have difficulty controlling their
anger then girls. Girls with post-traumatic stress disorder are more likely while men with post-
traumatic stress disorder are far more likely to get difficulties with drugs or alcohol to feel anxious
and depressed. Both women and men who experience post-traumatic stress disorder may develop
physical health concerns.
Treatment for PTSD
There are excellent treatments for PTSD. Nonetheless, not everybody who experiences a trauma
seeks remedy. A minumum of one study discovered that girls react to treatment as well as or better
than guys. This might be because girls are often more comfortable sharing feelings and talking
about private matters with others than guys.
Women in the military
Girls in the armed forces are at high risk for exposure to traumatic events, especially during times of
war. Currently, about 15% of military personnel in Iraq are women. A growing variety of women are
now being exposed to fight even though men are far more than likely to have battle. Girls in the
armed forces are at higher danger of sexual assault than men or exposure to sexual-harassment.
Future studies are needed to better understand the ramifications of women's contact with sexual
assault and both combat.
