- Welcome.I hope you have your seat belts on, we’re going on a voyage. My name is Ana McConnell and I just completed my library endorsement at Old Dominion University. I have been a classroom teacher for 24 years. I’ve taught elementary aged children in Virginia, California, and Japan. As a library media specialist the classroom experience has been a benefit in my effort to provide the best service to staff and students. Happily, I was hired as a library media specialist this summer and I’m very pleased to be here today to share some great tools. My intent is that you leave here today with a good understanding of how these tools can be used in your classroom or library.2:00
- If you’ve watched any of the science fiction stories, like Star Trek, you probably thought how farfetched the stories were. Really, beaming in and out of the spaceship was pretty out there. The technology that was portrayed in the Star Trek movies is becoming a reality. Our students are growing up in an era of ever changing technology at warp speed. They are tech savvy and they are not afraid to explore. This is where we come in. We need to expose them to tools that will enhance their learning, keep them engaged, and provide them with strategies that will allow them to be a part of a competitive global market. Today we will explore four tools available to you. They are free and easy to navigate if you have some computer skills. These tools are all online resources that were well thought out. I will provide the sites, examples of how to implement them, and curriculum correlations. Enjoy and don’t bump into any Klingons.3:00
- It seems as if we are approaching the “last frontier” of technology but we are not. There is so much out there that we need to attend sessions like this to guide us and transport us into that world. We know we learn best from each other. Well, beam us up Scotty. Here we go.:30
- There are four tools that I would like to share with you today: Vocaroo: an audio recording tool, Domo Animate: slideshow creator , VoiceThread: collaboration, and PicLit: a creative writing tool. Each tool has its own unique personality and use. Each of them can easily be incorporated into your school program. We are bombarded by new concepts on a daily basis. I hope this is a refreshing way to learn about a few special tools that will provide differentiation and enrichment to your program.1:00
- Vocaroo is an audio recording tool. The great thing about Vocaroo is that there is no program installation and you don’t have to create an account. Easy!! You simply log onto http://vocaroo.com/ and start recording. Before you begin make sure that your microphone is on, then click on the “Click to Record” button. It begins to record immediately. The catch is that it can only record for up to 3 minutes. However, it’s super easy to embed into many types of formats. Vocaroo provides an embed code or you can also download it. Imagine placing an audio recording in your website or blog; you would wow your staff. (I will point out the different sections of Vocaroo)2:00
- Vocaroo provides many ways to share and embed your recording. Here you see that it will easily embed to certain sites. You can also download to your computer and this action will save the recording. Use the link to your recording to paste into a document.There are many ways to implement this tool to your instructional day. A few examples are:Students can discuss a character or a famous AmericanTeachers can use it for clues on a scavenger huntA quick study guide A report to parentsRetell a storyRecord a poemPractice reading sentencesRead a short storyThis is an example of an audio recording that I created. After I recorded the message, I saved the recording and this screen appears. Now you’re ready to share. I used a WAV file and downloaded it to my computer then I used an action button to link the recording and Voila! (I will point out the choices used to embed).6:00
- In this application I used a third grade SOL to make a curriculum connection. These language arts objectives are relevant throughout the elementary curriculum. However, for this presentation, the focus grade for this tool is third grade. These objectives can be integrated with social studies, science, and math. In social studies you might do a presentation on Greece. If you’re teaching the scientific method, the students can record their hypothesis. Finally, in math, the students can describe how they solved a problem. Ask for other suggestions.2:00
- I’ve discussed the many wonderful uses for Vocaroo. However, Vocaroo has a few limitations. It has a relatively short recording time of three minutes. The recordings will need to be monitored so you don’t exceed the limit. I found that it was enough time for quick responses. Another limitation is that you must have a microphone on your computer or other device. If you don’t have a microphone you can install a webcam. 1:00
- This next site that I’m sharing requires a bit more patience and computer skill. This is Domo animate. Domo is the Japanese mascot for the channel NHK in Japan. Domo is the brown rectangular shaped one. You can create an animated slideshow by using the many tools. The site provides all the necessary tools to create a digital story. Students of all ages will enjoy the characters, the background, and other effects that can be chosen. The arrow is pointing to the ribbon of choices you have when creating a slideshow. There are characters, speech bubbles, setting, elements, music, and effects. (I will take a minute to go over the features of the ribbon).2:00
- Once you’ve selected all your scenes you can add speech bubbles and music. This site also allows you to upload pictures from your persoanalfile. Now, you’re ready to share by using the embed code or links. Notice, how nicely the page is laid out and easy to copy the codes. I’ve linked a short slideshow and now I will click on Domo’sface. Enjoy! (Point out the two choices of how to copy).2:00
- I would use Domo Animate with upper elementary students, such as fourth and fifth graders. However, the teacher may use Domo to teach any concept that you want to introduce. For example, if you’re starting a unit on parts of speech, you can create a short slideshow that discusses nouns, verbs, or other parts. It would be a great hook. Domo may be used as a culminating activity for a science or social studies unit. The students can write a short story. They could create a response to a question the teacher poses. I showed my grandson how to use Domo Animate and he actually figured out how to create the scenes and add elements. He’s only six. Perhaps, younger students could also use this site.2:00
- While this program does require some computer ability, it is most likely that our tech savvy students will be able to use it. It is a bit time consuming. The story will need a few scenes and it could take some creative wait time. This might be an activity that you could do over a few sessions. The finished product is worth the wait. As with most sites, an account will need to be created:40
- VoiceThreadis a great collaborating tool that is asynchronous or something that occurs at different intervals. I can respond to a question at my leisure and it will post to the VoiceThread. For example, as an ODU student I was required to use Voicethread for one of my classes. The entire class was supported using VoiceThread. In other words, I communicated with the class entirely through this collaboration tool. It is very easy to use. Once you get started, it requires very little effort to use. The message on the slide describes how much more personal VoiceThread is than texting.2:00
- VoiceThread can be used to collaborate with others or as a presentation tool. Collaborationwith this tool requires very little effort. The teacher can post a question and each student can respond by writing a comment, recording audio or image, or phone. I’ve used VoiceThreadwith young students. Each chose a famous American that we had been studying. Then they drew a picture of their character which I scanned. Finally, each student recorded their description. They were engaged and absorbed by the activity.VoiceThread may used with all age groups or grade levels from Kindergarten to college. I’ve used a technology standard of learning that can apply to all levels. (I will spend a few minutes pointing out the different elements and then I will click on the image of the VoiceThread to show an example of how it works).6:00
- Voicethread does require you to create an account. However, after 5 voicethreads, you will have to upgrade your account. The cost is $79 per year. It is well worth it if you plan on using it in the library or classroom. Remember, it is public not secure. Be careful, if you create a single account and login, your students are able to make changes to others’ responses. :40
- Wow. This is a super fun creative writing website is for all students and it’s free. You will need to provide some teacher direction, especially for the younger students. You can’t upload pictures but there are a number of good pictures to use. Once the picture has been chosen you can create your poem, sentence, or paragraph. You can Drag-N-Drop or Freestyle your word choices. In other words, you can select words from the list or you can generate your own ideas. If you want to share the finished product, you will need to create an account. (I will spend a minute pointing out the parts of PicLit).2:00
- PicLit is very easy to use for students of all ages. I created this one in about two minutes. I chose to add words to describe the picture. Students can use this tool to generate a sentence or paragraph. This is a great tool for reinforcement. This site provides a list of words that are easily collected and it would benefit students that need a little prompting or help. I will focus on first grade but remember this can apply to all elementary students. The pictures are bright and the activity is easy to use. This might be just what you need to help motivate learners to write.1:00
- Finally, let’s talk about the limitations of PicLit. I found very few limitations. I found that there are ads on the page that might be distracting to students. Before you use it, you might want to warn the students of the ads. Another limitation is the limited pictures. There are many choices but it is limited and you are not able to upload personal pictures. These limitations will not keep you from using this great writing site.2:00
- There you have it. You don’t have to feel like a Klingon because now you know about great tools to use in the library. I also hope you leave here today with a good sense of where to find them and how to integrate into your program. Don’t be afraid to explore. The best way to learn is just by using them and playing around with them. Believe me the new generation is all too quick to explore and learn how use the tools that I’ve introduced today. In fact, they are wired that way. It’s all too evident when you see young toddlers playing with cell phones. 3:00
