13. Was 1750 – 1900 an era of progress? In our study of history so far we have learnt about political revolutions – in England and America. Cycle 1 is about revolutions – but they are revolutions that have an impact on everyday life. On 1 st May 1851, the Great Exhibition was opened in London by Queen Victoria. It brought together thousands of exhibits, with more than half of them being British. Approximately six million visitors came – many of them ordinary workers. The aim was to celebrate the progress being made in science, the arts and technology. The exhibition also intended to show everyone that Britain was the leading industrial nation – the ‘workshop of the world’. However not everyone felt the same way.
