Lh Surge But No Ovulation
Understanding Luteinizing hormone

Susan asks…

HELP, ttc and I have been using an lh ovulation predictor kit. I’m
confused abot the results?
They are from the dollar store and the instructions say to take a test each day for five days I
have taken them for 6 days now. They also say that a positive result is when both the control
line and the test line are the same color of pink and that when the control line and the test line
are a different color it is a negative result. The first two days there were no lines, the third day
there was a light pink test line, the 4th day there was a little bit darker of a test line and the fifth
was even darker still. Today there is no test line at all. The line from yesterday was the darkest
but not as dark as the control line. Why would it disappear. Did I have my lh Surge yestarday
even though the lines weren’t the same.

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

Try temping in conjunction with the OPKs. OPKs will tell you when you are about to ovulate and
temping will confirm you have ovulated.

It sounds like your body is trying to ovulate, but for some reason it isn’t quite getting there OR
you could have missed the positive result. I have to test twice daily to make sure I catch my
positive.

                                                                                                   1/7
I recommend using www.fertilityfriend.com for charting and www.saveontests.com for you
OPKs. Another good site for information on OPKs is www.peeonastick.com

Also, you should read Toni Weschler’s book “Taking Charge of Your Fertility” Awesome book,
should be required reading for every woman of child bearing age.

Best of luck to you.

Ruth asks…

Clearblue fertility monitor remains high, no ovulation, help?
This is my second month using Clearblue fertility monitor (hubby and I are TTC). Today I am on
my CD14, my monitor reads High, it’s been reading High since CD10. My cycle is only
21-22days, so I’m expecting to get AF in a week. The last two day, I’ve been getting cramps
and I thought I would be ovulating soon but my monitor still reads High. I haven’t reach Peak
or Ovulation yet. I’m nervous because I’m afraid that I may not be ovulating this month. Hubby
and I have been BD every other day since my last period. It’s probably too soon to even try
HPT. Has anyone experience this? Should I still be waiting for my ovulation or I maybe am
pregnant already? What happens if I do get pregnant, would the monitor still be able to detect
the Peak and Ovulation LH surge? Or would it remind high the entire time once I conceieve?

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

The first month I used the monitor, it never detected a peak reading, and had 16 or so high

                                                                                          2/7
readings. The second month, and every month on, it has worked like a charm. I have shorter
cycles too, and normally ovulate on day 11 or 12, and last month I started to get nervous
because I was on CD 14 and still at low fertility. CD 15 I finally got a high reading, and peaked
on CD 16 and 17. So it is possible that you may be having a delayed ovulation this month,
which means your cycle will be a little longer. Try not to stress about it, cause it can delay
ovulation even longer. Stress delays ovulation, not your period. So if you’re stressing, it can
delay ovulation, which will make your cycle longer and period arrive later. If it read low, and then
jumped to high, I doubt you are already pregnant. It jumps to high because of a rise in estrogen.
Then jumps to peak when it detects the LH surge. Once you ovulate, progesterone takes over,
rather then estrogen controlling your cycle. If you were to be pregnant, your body would
continue to release progesterone to sustain the lining for the fertilized egg, and therefore your
monitor would not have detected a rise in estrogen in the first place. So it sounds to me, if
you’re cramping, and the monitoe detected a rise in estrogen, and you have high readings,
you’re nearing ovulation, and it may be delayed this cycle for whatever reason. Good luck to
you, and LOTS of baby sent from me to you!

Nancy asks…

TTC for over a year! Tried Charting BBT and ovulation testing daily
(for LH surge)… no luck! Help?
I am 21 and my husband is 22. I have endometriosis, but had a laproscopy to remove all scar
tissue build up and was told I should have no trouble conceiving . My doctor says Clomid is a
dangerous drug and won’t prescribe it… what is my next option?? Please, please help!
*** EDIT ***
Addition details:
My cycle is very unpredictable. Sometimes every 28 days, sometimes 2-3 months! And with the
opk, I do get positive LH surge, but have never conceived. I am doing everything the Doc
says.. charting, testing, and doing the BD.

                                                                                              3/7
My hubby and I have both done the new at home fertility tests, and it seems like we should not
have any problems… but at a year later- nothing! Thanks for the tips so far! Have any of you
used Clomid?

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

We need more details.

Are you seeing an LH surge (getting a positive OPK)?

Are you seeing a temperature surge roughly half-way through your cycle on your BBT?

If you are getting a positive OPK and/or seeing a temp surge, AND you are baby dancing at
what looks like the right time, BUT you have not gotten pregnant in one year, then it is time to
seek out your doc.

However, your doc doesn’t believe in clomid, so it is time to see a different doc (probably a
reproductive endocrinologist) who can run some more tests to find out why you may not be
conceiving. You may have hormonal issues or your DH may have male factor issues that could
be preventing pregnancy as well.

If you are NOT getting postive OPK’s and/or not seeing a temp shift about half way through
your surge on MOST cycles, (one or two anovulatory cycles here or there is nothing to worry
about), then it is time to see your doc right away. If you are not ovulating, you will not get
pregnant.

Good luck!

Edit to YOUR edit:
I used clomid for 4 months, ovulated months 1-3, but not 4. At that point, doc switched me to
Femara. I got pregnant twice on Femara, but they weren’t sticky beans. I am currently trying
Femara again (month #1 again). Femara is a pill similar to clomid, but some say it has less side
effects than clomid.

                                                                                             4/7
Carol asks…

How can I? What can we do?
The husband and I are trying to conceive, we even bought a kit…as I was taking the test the line(
ovulation/ lh surge) line started to get darker but not near as dark as the other line, I thought
the following day it would match which meant ovulation, however the next day there was no
line AT ALL on the surge area. I spotted a few days after. Then again after sex a few days after
that. My body is doing some wierd stuff…Has anyone ever expeirenced this or know whats going
on? What can we do to get preggo
ok..hubby and I have sex everyday…we are newlyweds and we do just cuz we want to…not only
to concieve. Im almost 30 however, and want to asap. my periods were as follows.
8/2 then again 8/26 then not until 9/28 (late) and i have spotted after sex 2 times since
then…..????

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

You may have only had a small surge of LH or you may have missed it on the test. Did you test
2 times a day? My doctor recommended doing this because some women only surge for 12
hours or less so by the time you test again the next day you could have missed it completely. I
would say you got your positive the day before there was no line which means you would have
ovulated 12-72 hours after that. As long as you were having intercourse every other day during
that time you will be ok. The spotting could be implantation bleeding. Wait until you are late and
test. If you don’t conceive this month and continue to never get an actual positive on your kit
see your doctor to make sure you are indeed ovulating. Read the book “Taking Charge of Your
Fertility”. It is great for ttcer’s. Best wishes ttc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                                                                             5/7
Donna asks…

I am using an Ovulation Predictor Kit and starting testing
yesterday which was day 14. No LH surge yet but I?
am feeling discharge today…Help. I don’t want to miss it. What should I do. I just tested this
morning.

Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:

The LH surge happens 24 to 48 hours before you ovulate. Ovulation happens anywhere from
ten to sixteen days before you menstruate. Your OPKs should tell you on what day to start
testing-if you have 37 day cycle, chances are you won’t ovuate until day 21 at the earliest, and
so, you would have a whole week of testing ahead. On the other hand, if you have a 28 day
cycle and a 14 day luteal phase (the time between ovulation and menstruation) then you may
have missed your LH surge. If you’re feeling discharge, it may be your body getting ready to
ovulate, or it may be the sticky, egg white cervical mucous-only you can tell that, by looking at it.
Check the instructions for your OPK to find out when to begin testing…if your cycles are
irregular, it’s often suggested that you use your shortest cycle in the last six months to
determine when to start testing.

                                                                                               6/7
Sharon asks…

How do can you tell if you are ovulation??? or if you have a Luteal
                                   Phase Defect ???
Hi , I am 35 years old and I have a 22 month old and 13 year old and had no trouble getting pg
with either of them . But for the past 5 months I have tried to get pg with not luck … up until
March my cycles were always 28 days and I was noticing the cervical mucus present at my
most fertile time the clear egg whitish.. But as of April/May my cylce changed to 27 I am not
sure about luteal phase ??? Maybe mine is to short .. I started using a ovulation kit and I never
got the LH surge for the past 2 months and I did not notice any discharge other then
yellowish/white kind of creamy not sure if I am ovulation at all … any help advice would be
                                   apprecatied
