In Boden block, Rama Gahir walked 25 km to Khariar to leave her three-day-
old child at a Christian mission. On the way, she sold the baby for Rs.80 and
two saris. In a hospital in Khariar, another woman abandoned her male
child.
Says Kapil Narain Tiwary, a former MLA, "Here, children are sold cheaper
than channas and the government, instead of rescuing the poor from
hunger, is pressurizing them to deny the sale stories.
The tragedy started in 1965 when the rains failed. The villagers waited and
prayed, but for 20 years the heavens have been unkind. The iron grip of
drought and famine hardened, resulting in the worst hunger and starvation
ever.
Phanas Punji of Amlapalli village in X, had sold her two-year-old sister-in-
law for Rs.40 to save her own two starving little ones.

I wrote a review of the book and wanted to carry his interview with it.
I wanted him to say that it was not just Islamic fundamentalism but
fundamentalism of all kinds that he was against. He obliged.
However, the editor of the books pages of the magazine added
excerpts from the book which were even more volatile plucked out of
context.
Firebrand IFS bureaucrat-turned-politician Syed Shahabuddin read it
and demanded that the book be banned. Street protests followed in
India and Pakistan. In Karachi, a few protesters died while being fired
upon. Apparently Ayatollah Khomeini saw this on television and
dispatched his Valentine's Day fatwa against the writer. The rest is
unfortunate history.

While the true motive of the operation remains shrouded in mystery and
conjecture, BBC, after it's investigation into it, alleged that arms were
intended for the socio-spiritual organization Ananda Marga. This has been
disputed by the prime accused in the case who claims the central
government itself was behind the incident to counter the CPI(M) cadres.
The chief accused also claims that it was a conspiracy of the Indian
government together with RAW and MI5 to overthrow the communist
government in West Bengal and he was given assurances from the central
government about his safety and return to Denmark. He further alleges that
MP Pappu Yadav, who is in touch with thePrime Minister of India facilitated his
safe exit from India
13 May 1998
As the giant grey mushroom clouds billowed into the sky, the 20 odd men
looked up expectantly. There was nothing visible to the naked eye but the
vast blue expanse. One of the men shook his fist and shouted at the invisible
adversary, "Catch us if you can." The others doubled up in laughter. They
enjoyed the little game of deception they were playing. At the thought of
how the next day spooks from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) would
download images from the satellite and would scratch their heads or
whatever wondering what the hell the Indians were up to.
The incident went down as one of the CIA's biggest
intelligence failures.

The film was shot in the rocky terrain of Ramanagara, over a span of two
and a half years. After the Central Board of Film Certification mandated
the removal of several violent scenes, it was released with a length of
198 minutes. In 1990, the original director's cut of 204 minutes became
available on home media. When first released , the film received negative
critical reviews and a tepid commercial response, but favourable word-of-
mouth publicity helped it to become a box office success. It broke records
for continuous showings in many theatres across India, and ran for more
than five years at Mumbai's Minerva theatre. By some accounts, this film
is the highest grossing Indian film of all time, adjusted for inflation.
