[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Q.1. Arrange the following sets of scientists with their period of active research – earliest period first. a) Newton, Copernicus, Kepler, Tycho Brahe b) Franklin, Coulomb, Faraday, Michelson 5 points for each set.
Referring to a now-famous incident, eminent mathematician G H Hardy had said about Srinivas Ramanujan, “I remember once going to see him when he was lying ill at Putney. I had ridden in taxi-cab No. 1729 , and remarked that the number seemed to be rather a dull one, and that I hoped it was not an unfavourable omen. "No", he replied, "it is a very interesting number; it is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two positive cubes in two different ways." ” The generalized name of the such numbers which can be expressed in n ways as sums of two cubes is derived from this incident. Name it. Q.2.
Q.3. X gave the first demonstration of the piezoelectric effect along with his brother Jacques in 1880. In 1881, they they demonstrated the reverse effect: that crystals could be made to deform when subject to an electric field. X studied ferromagnetism, paramagnetism, and diamagnetism for his doctoral thesis and gave that temperature related phenomena of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic substances. But he is more famous for his another work in collaboration with Y for which he won Nobel Prize. Identify X.
Luigi Alyisio Galvani (September 9, 1737 – December 4, 1798) was an Italian physician and physicist. In 1791, he discovered that the muscles of dead frogs legs twitched when struck by a spark. The observation made Galvani the first investigator to appreciate the relationship between electricity and animation — or life. This was one of the first forays into the study of bioelectricity. Galvani called the term animal electricity to describe the force that activated the muscles of his specimens. The phenomenon was dubbed galvanism, after Galvani, on the suggestion of his peer and sometime intellectual adversary Alessandro Volta. Galvani's report of his investigations and discovery became inspiration for a very popular literary work few years later. Name it. Q.4.
Q.5. The three scientists shown worked on a common topic. The fourth picture represents an image taken by another scientist on the same topic. Identify this scientist.
Q.6. We knew the world would not be the same. Few people laughed, few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." I suppose we all thought that, one way or another. Whose famous quotes are these and in which context?

The book X written by Y contains 120 chapters, divided into 8 parts. Sutra Sthana Nidan Sthana Viman Sthana Sharir Sthana Indriya Sthana Chikitsa Sthana Kalpa Sthana Siddhi Sthana The name Y literally means ‘wandering scholars’ or ‘wandering physicians.’ Give X and Y. Q.8.
The following is an excerpt from a very famous book. Give the name of the book and the name of the author. The square root of half the number of a swarm of bees is gone to a shrub of jasmine; and so are eight-ninths of the whole swarm: a female is buzzing to one remaining male that is humming within a lotus in which he is confined, having allured to it by its fragrance at night. Say, lovely woman, the number of bees. Q.9.
The area of a cyclic quadrilateral whose sides have lengths a, b, c, d is given by where s, the semiperimeter, is This formula is associated with a famous Indian mathematician, who had proved it in his works. Name him. Q.10.
This is an excerpt of a letter written by X to Rabindranath Tagore A short time before my lecture, a multi-millionaire proprietor of a very famous telegraph company telegraphed me with an urgent request to meet me. I replied that I had no time. In response he said that he is coming to meet me in person and within a short time he himself arrived with patent forms in hand. He made an earnest request to me not to divulge all valuable research results in today's lecture : "There is money in it -- let me take out patent for you. You do not know what money you are throwing away" etc. Of course, "I will only take half share in the profit -- I will finance it" etc. … See, the research that I have been dedicated to doing, is above commercial profits. I am getting older - I am not getting enough time to do what I had set out to do -- I refused him. Identify X. Q.11.
This statement given by Baudayana in his Sulba Sutra in sixth century BC, depicts that the result Y was known prior to the works of X. It is believed that X visited India later and copied it after which it came to be known as Y. Give X or Y. Q.12.

This handwritten piece has had a great significance in the history of science and is influential till date. Identify.
The fourth verse of the Rigvedic hymn 1:50 (50th hymn in book 1 of rigveda) is as follows: taraNir vishvadarshato jyotishkrdasi surya | vishvamaa bhaasirochanam || which means “Swift and all beautiful art thou, O Surya (Surya=Sun), maker of the light, illuminating all the radiant realm.” Commenting on this verse in his Rigvedic commentary, Sayana who was a minister in the court of Bukka of the great Vijayanagar Empire of Karnataka in South India (in early 14th century) says: tatha ca smaryate yojananam. sahasre dve dve sate dve ca yojane ekena nimishardhena kramaman. In this verse two numbers are used, 2202 yojanas and half a nimisha. What speed in meter per second it will correspond to?
X was one of the founding fathers of quantum mechanics . He won a Nobel prize for his interpretation of the probability density function for ψ*ψ in the Schrödinger equation of quantum mechanics . His Ph.D. student Delbrück, and six of his assistants (Fermi, Heisenberg, Goeppert-Mayer, Herzberg, Pauli, Wigner) went on to win Nobel Prizes. Einstein, who opposed quantum mechanics once wrote to him “I, at any rate, am convinced that He does not throw dice.” which is often paraphrased as “God does not play dice with the universe.” Identify X.
X, an engineer and physicist, was named among the LIFE magazines “100 most influential Americans of the 20 th Century”. His invention Y was one the most significant inventions of the last century revolutionizing technology. He was awarded Nobel Prize in Physics for the same. X brought only one of his three children to the Nobel Prize ceremony. His two sons were studying at Harvard University, and X did not want to disrupt their studies. King Gustav of Sweden scolded X because of this, and X assured the King that the next time he would bring all his children to the ceremony. He kept his promise as 16 years later he won again in Physics. Identify X.
While presenting a lecture on the theory of radiation and the ultraviolet catastrophe, X intended to show his students that the contemporary theory was inadequate, because it predicted results not in accordance with experimental results. During this lecture, X committed an error in applying the theory, which unexpectedly gave a prediction that agreed with the experiment. The error was a simple mistake—similar to arguing that flipping two fair coins will produce two heads one-third of the time—that would appear obviously wrong to anyone with a basic understanding of statistics. However, the results it predicted agreed with experiment, and X realized it might not be a mistake at all. He for the first time took the position that the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution would not be true for microscopic particles where fluctuations due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle will be significant. Physics journals refused to publish his paper. However, the current theories about a class of particles use the same probability scheme as taken by X in the above lecture, essentially taking head-tail and tail-head as one event. Identify X.

  • 14. Identify X. Q.11.

  • 20. Identify X.
  • 21. Identify X.
