Quick Context - Berkhamsted School . Diamond School - prep prep to sixth form. Mixed teachng until senior and then come back together in sixth form. Library on each campus - Prep, kings and CastleIndependent School. Affluent areaWifi, bring your own device, mobile learning, introduction of ipads in the classroom. Principal very forward thinking - embraces new technology , new ideas for teaching. Keen to implement wifi and bring your own device policy. On the whole similar thinking and reasoning on Libraries and the learning environment. Plan department five year development plan around the School development plan.Manage a generous budget - wealth of opportunities to deliver and develop but we are not without our own challenges.Presentation is us in a nutshell - rather a lot -discuss in more detail later in the Q and A if we have time and very happy for you to get in contact with me after Broken the presentation into two areas – Creating a 20th Century learning environment for our digital learners incorporating tools, resources and technologiesSupporting and equipping our digital learners Conducive library environment - photos ( Girls School KINGS LIBRARY) One of our successes - involvement and included myself in the design of the library, included pupils and all stakeholders. Imperative that you are involved in the process and the decision making. Not a huge area so we wanted to make the most of the square footage and open the library up. Research classes and projects take place - desks, pc facilties, plasma to demonstrate and deliver teaching alongside great tool for advertising and presenting themes/ special book days etcGirls library incredibly social place with the girls - new timetable, extended lunchtimes, different break times etc. Had to have a leisure and comfy area ( encourage recreational reading, reading for pleasure - mags, journals, books, non-fiction ( KS3) textbooks. Book groups - staff and girls. Encourage pupils to recommend titles. THEIR libraryOpen at 8 – 5 ( late night 5-6 Tues and Thurs) Mon and Wed at Boys school
Library built as a memorial to our boys who died in the Great War.Built in 1924Bags of character - challenges - behaviour and delivering library classesPlans to change the layout ( re-locating the archive)Hoping to accommodate all learning needs - offer more flexible space. Room set up with presentation equipment, pupils and staff. Group discussion work. Pcs moved to the sides - open space up - carousel does not work - wasted space. Different level seating and work space. Move the issue desk and open up . Decrease book stock - still retaining fiction, KS3 Non-ficiton and Art books. Open up upstairs - taking out bays. Adding a silent area at the back - sound prrof area - still important to feature and accommodate silent working. Comfy setees upstairs. Place for plasm - deliver instructions. Challenge maintaining the architectiral features but creating a flexible and more suitable learning environment for our digital natives. Set up wi-fi connection - pupils use their own laptops ( access issues to school network - huge area)
Introduction of Ipads & Kindles - important to be a department that highlights new tools, technologies and resources. Great opportunity to demonstrate your expertise and move away from the traditional librarian stereotype. Encourage staff to try new technology and make pupils aware of them. Encourage the pupils to Kindles - short term . Long term strategy e book library ( operate alongside print collection - still be updated and managed and have an importance. Plan - fiction books . Looking for a suitable school library platform. Involved in developing a product with Browns ( Books for Students) . Two years ago approached them at a Conference and asked what they were doing if anything and could schools be involved? ( Achievement) Other platforms available but they have not thought about a school library setting and in some instances are not competitively priced. Browns initial idea - too clunky , through liaison and discussion with school libs went asking what we wanted, what we needed, what we were looking for - went back to the drawing board and have re-launched a new version. Viewing it on Tuesday. Selection? Downloading process? Embedding in LMS?Cost?Enjoyable process involved pupils in a testing environment.
Exceptionally popular with young people. Teachers have put content together Compatible with android phones and apple productsPodcasts - 10 minutes in length supports all exam boards can be synced with itunes account. Picked up information on this from BETTMakes revision accessible and bearableOur users want content which can be accessed easily, quickly and from mobile technology. Want to fit in their revision around listening to music, walking the dog, meal times, on the way home.Involve pupils in the trails if you can - need their points of view Take on one subject - go for the whole packageInvestment - expensive resource but we felt we were not supporting GCSE years and wanted to fill this gao. At least re-introduce the libs to them and involve them so when they come into the sixth form develop their expectations and be famialiar with librarians demonstrating resourecs ad teaching them research skills, resources etc
User generated material - You Tube, technorati and vimeo ( creative commons licence)Start small - decide which area will suit your needsWhat we have developed over the last 2 years….

First visits for Year 7 - new pupils day which happens in June. Great opportunity to meet and greet and get them to participate in a quick quizz (orienenteering exercise/find your way around)Sept - Formal induction ( timetabled in their English lessons) - using the catalogue, MFD, code of conduct and expectations ( set prep)Second lesson - Introduce the GO for Gold Award - handouts available ( brought with me) and also designed a website using google docs and have put all info and handouts on here. Show the children how to access the websites and information which is on googlesites. GO through the awards and rules. Regular visits to the Library working on the Go for Gold challengeHistor, Science and Art - key departments we work with.Science project - renewable energy ( KS3 books, brochure, website - discussion on correct usage of information from the internetHistory - All the lessons are embedded within the curriculum / schemes of work - library timetabled within them. Some take place in the library, ICT or classroom depending on what the context is - all delivered by librarians – material discussed with Head of Department - handouts sent to them to comment . Collaborative approach.History - Quiz, Web evaluative exercise and a Summer Medieval History Project. ( Built activities into the project lessons equipping them with the skills they will need to complete the project successfully. Three activities – quiz, note taking exercise and bibliography exercise. Have brought some hand-outs with me which demonstrate some of the work we do.
Year 7 - discuss the status of images on GoogleYear 8 - we expand and explore the Creative Commons Licence. Ensuring that they have permission to re-use images, video, audio etc. ImplicationsYear 9 we move up a gear with the project work. The diary now becomes an extended essay - deliver a presentation on structuring an essay and use of resources. Discuss basic principles of research - encourage them to start using footnotes and expect an error free bibliography. One of our biggest successes is the relationship we have with the History Department and development we have been able to work on togetherWhere the opportunity arises - grab it. Ad hoc lesson researching a topic add a resource booklet ( ask permission and discuss with teacher aforehand . Simple reminder about research needs a bibliography – provide the bibliography grid.
