Proposal.
Genre
I have decided that I want my genre of magazine to follow an indie style because after creating a
survey for my target audience research, it was one of the favourite genres of music magazine and
they thought it would be extremely successful. Indie is an extremely popular genre of music and at
the moment there are some big artists such as Mumford & Sons and the Arctic Monkeys.
Masthead
I have decided that I want to call my music magazine ‘SOUND’ as it is easily relatable to the type of
magazine that I am producing as music is a form of sound. By having a short and catchy masthead, I
believe that my audience will appeal to this because it is memorable.
Frequency
The frequency of which my music magazine will be released is monthly as I believe in quality over
quantity. I think that more time should be put into producing something that the readership of the
magazine will really want. As it is a monthly released magazine, it will be of a higher price as they’re
getting more for their money and at £3.90 I believe it is of reasonable price. Even though there are
some disadvantages to a monthly magazine, such as the news printed in side is not completely up to
date, the advantages such as social media and the online versions of magazine outweigh the cons
because they’re able to keep up to date through these mediums.
As the magazine is released monthly, the readership of the medium will have higher expectations
because we have a longer to produce the magazine so we need to make sure that what we are
creating is a huge success otherwise it is likely to fail. We will be able to keep readers up to date
through the presence of the online press, however, we do not want to update that too frequently
otherwise nobody will want to buy our music magazine so I will need to keep a healthy balance
between the two.
Target Audience
The target audience of my magazine will be teenagers aged 16-22 years old because at the moment,
indie music is extremely popular with this generation of people, and, by having a magazine created
solely for the purpose of entertaining them will make them feel important. As I have chosen a young
audience, I believe it’s important to have chosen bright and attractive colours as I need to capture
their attention when it is on the shelves with all the other magazines.
Content and USP
The content of my magazine will feature 80+ pages of reviews, interviews, competitions, freebees and
so much more. Each month there will be one key, featuring artist where there will be a minimum of 4
pages dedicated to them. In these pages there will be:
An interview
Their favourite artist, album and single of the month
The readers chance to ask the artist questions
Tour Dates (if any)
Trivial box where we find out things such as favourite food, colour and more!
The unique selling point for this magazine will be that each month there will be a token within the
magazine where each month these are collected and they’re able to use these to win prizes ranging
from an EP from one of our chosen artists to concert of festival tickets! Each prize is worth a different
number of tokens, so if you’re a patient person, then the better prize you will receive!
Magazine Launch
As this is a brand new magazine, the launch of the magazine will have to be something fresh and
exciting! By starting the magazine with big prizes such as chances to win a trip to three of the biggest
cities in the world and a special edition front cover, we will hopefully be able to get started with a
bang!
