XMenu
- 1. XMENU
Thank you for using XMenu. This program brings back the old-style Apple Menu to
Mac OS X and includes also a complete application launcher. By adding one or
more global menus to the right side of the menu bar you can easily access your
preferred applications, folders (and sub-folders), documents, files and snippets.
Furthermore there’s no explicit need for configuration (e.g. creating lots of folders
and aliases or adding items to user-defined setups) — just activate the menus
you like:
• Applications (directory ‘/Applications’)
No more need to add many applications or the Applications folder to the Dock.
• Developer Applications (directory ‘/Developer/Applications’)
• Home (directory ‘~/’)
• Documents (directory ‘~/Documents’)
• User-Defined (directory ‘~/Library/Application Support/XMenu’)
If you want to build your own menu (like the ‘real’ old Apple Menu), add files,
folders or aliases to ‘~/Library/Application Support/XMenu’ (this folder will be
created after starting XMenu for the first time), e.g. copy the contents of your Fa-
vorites folder or aliases of your favorite applications and documents into it.
• Snippets (directory ‘~/Library/Application Support/XSnippets/’)
Plain and rich text documents, text clippings, Internet locations and other files of
this menu are inserted into the current application if no modifier key is pressed.
All menus and sub-menus update themselves automatically (unlimited number of
hierarchies) just like the good old Apple Menu so it’s not necessary to refresh
them manually or after a certain time interval. In addition, XMenu optionally

- 2. displays small or large icons (using unique or generic icons), sorts menus by kind
(folders before or after files) and follows aliases and symbolic links.
Note that contrary to many other solutions, this is neither a hack (‘haxie’) nor an
unofficial menu extra.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5 or later.
INSTALLATION/UPDATING
Copy XMenu into the Applications folder or wherever you like. Probably you will
also want to add this tool to your startup items to access the menus immediately
after booting or logging in (see System Preferences > Accounts > My Account >
Startup Items). If you do so, don’t select Hide because otherwise XMenu won’t be
recognized as a ‘faceless’ background application by the system and therefore an
icon in the Dock could appear.
USAGE
Start XMenu and activate the desired global menus (by default only the applica-
tions menu is activated) and options in the preferences panel (see below). XMenu
uses the icons of the target folders and files. So if you don't like then or want to
accelerate XMenu, set the option Icons to None or use generic icons for folders or
all items.
TIPS & TRICKS
• Press the Command modifier key while clicking on an XMenu item in the
menu bar or right-click an XMenu menu to access the preferences and about
panels, to check for updates, to open the XMenu folder in the Finder, or to quit
the application.
• Use modifier keys to perform different operations:
- none Open file, launch application or insert snippet
- control Show item (open parent folder in Finder and select file)

- 3. - shift Show original (open parent folder of original in Finder)
If the selected item is not an alias, this is reveals the item.
- option Show original and hide current application
- command Show info (in Finder)
• Selecting a folder (a menu item with a sub-menu) opens the folder in the
Finder.
• Create sub-folders in your menu folders to minimize menu sizes, time to load
(sub-) menus and memory usage.
• Move the mouse over the menu titles to get tooltips.
• Menu items of applications always use unique icons (ignoring the option ‘Ge-
neric Icons’).
