Formative Assessment
Proficiency-based Learning
Today’s Objective
• Think about the role of formative assessment in
a proficiency-based learning system
▫ the relationship between content ELTs and
formative assessment
▫ the relationship between HOW targets and
formative assessment
▫ what are some formative assessment techniques
Formative Assessment is …
• “… on-going assessments, observations,
summaries and reviews that inform instruction
and give students feedback …” (Fisher & Frey,
2007 in Dodge)
• “… assessment for learning …” (Stiggins)
Formative assessment does not …
• Need to be lengthy or take a long time
• Need to be graded like summative assessments
BUT “when you use formative assessments you
must keep track of the data you collect.”
Formative Assessment & ELTs
• Gr. 5 Math: Understands (in context) the
concept of rounding decimals to any place using
place value (G)
▫ I know and can tell the value of any digit in a
whole numbers
▫ I know and can tell the value of any digit in a
decimals; I can read decimals, like .1 is “one tenth”
and .34 is “thirty-four hundredths”
▫ I know and use a rule for rounding with whole
numbers
▫ I can solve a word problem that tells me to round
my answer to the nearest _____th.
Formative Assessment & ELTs
• K Science: Understands (Classify and sort) how
objects can be described in terms of the
materials they are made of and their properties
(color, size, shape, weight, texture, flexibility,
etc.), (A-1)

catching an object while moving.
▫ Watches ball or object into hands
▫ Reaches arms towards the ball or object
▫ Gives with the ball or object as it hits hands
▫ Moves feet quickly to get into position to catch ball
or object

• Objectives appear as the “title” and or
“descriptions” of the activities you did to
formatively assess students
Formative Assessment & ELTs
• Understands (Describe the relationship between) print
and pictures in terms of the story convey meaning.
▫ I know where the words/letters are that are telling the
story.
▫ I know where the pictures are that are telling the story.
▫ I can point to the parts of the picture that I am hearing
about in the story.
▫ I can point to words that are telling about the picture.
▫ I can identify parts words or phrases in the story that tell
me something more than the pictures and I can find parts
of the pictures that aren’t described by the words but that
still tell me something.

molecular motion as a water molecule travels
through the 3 states of matter

a series of sounds as well as pitches in steps,
skips, leaps, and repeated notes using graphic
notation.
