What Child is this, who, laid to rest,
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:

The Babe, the Son of Mary.


Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear; for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.


So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come, peasant, king, to own Him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Carol #124 – Come Thou Long Expected Jesus

Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a Child, and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all-sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

WORSHIP LEADER
The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to
serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.

MEN
But now a righteousness from God, apart from
law, has been made known, to which the Law and
the Prophets testify.

EVERYONE
The righteousness from God comes through faith
in Jesus Christ to all who believe.

EVERYONE
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God, and are justified freely by His grace through
the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

WORSHIP LEADER
God presented Him as a sacrifice of atonement,
through faith in His blood. He did this to
demonstrate His justice, because in His
forbearance He had left the sins committed
beforehand unpunished.

WOMEN
He did it to demonstrate His justice at the present
time, so as to be just and the one who justifies
those who have faith in Jesus.

EVERYONE
In Him we have redemption through His blood,
the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the
riches of God’s grace that He lavished on us with
all wisdom and understanding.

WORSHIP LEADER
For this reason Christ is the mediator of a New
Covenant, that those who are called may receive
the promised eternal inheritance, now that He has
died as a ransom to set them free from the sins
committed under the First Covenant.
MEN
For you know that it was not with perishable
things such as silver or gold that you were
redeemed from the empty way of life
handed down to you from your forefathers,

EVERYONE
But with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb
without blemish or defect.

WORSHIP LEADER
Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him
from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith
and hope are in God.

EVERYONE
MY FAITH AND HOPE ARE IN GOD!

• Didn’t Jesus Say…

Romans 2:14
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law,
by nature do what the law requires, they are
a law to themselves, even though they do
not have the law. [15] They show that the
work of the law is written on their hearts,
while their conscience also bears witness,
and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even
excuse them [16] on that day when,
according to my gospel, God judges the
secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

We are Trapped by the law
We are Guilty under the law
We are Condemned under the law
We are Hopeless under the law
We will be Punished under the law

Galatians 4:4

forth his Son, born of woman, born under the
law, [5] to redeem those who were under the
law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba!

Paul claimed that God sent His Son into the
world to give 3 gifts

“But when the fullness of time had come…”
Fullness of time: The timetable of God is complete
– Like a pregnant woman ready to give birth.

 The people needed a Messiah more
than ever
 The World was unified and speaking a
common language
 The World was under the Pax Romana -
peace

“God sent …”
Sent: The action of God to send forth from
Himself His Son

 Past Tense
 An Intentional Act of God
 An Act that Demonstrates God’s Love

“God sent forth His Son …”
Son: Refers to His character, relationship, and role
with God the Father

 He contains the characteristics and
attributes of God
 He has a unique and singular relationship
with God
 He has a role of representing the mind,
character, and substance of God

“born of woman, born under the law …”
Born of a woman:
Jesus came in human form, to identify with our
weaknesses and to die our death

Born under the law:
Born with the same requirements so that he
could fulfill the requirements, tested, and
found true.

to redeem those who were under the law…

Redemption – to rescue from lost, to buy back, to
ransom, to loose or set free
To be redeemed is to be bought for a price and to
be delivered out of the authority of the law and
death. God paid Himself – He satisfied His justice.
The word reveals our own incapacity to satisfy
God’s justice with personal attempts to redeem
ourselves.

For even the Son of Man came not to be served
but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom
for many.”(Mark 10:45 ESV)
For there is one God, and there is one mediator
between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
[6] who gave himself as a ransom for all, which
is the testimony given at the proper time.
(1 Timothy 2:5-6 ESV)

…knowing that you were ransomed from the
futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not
with perishable things such as silver or gold,
[19] but with the precious blood of Christ, like
that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
(1 Peter 1:18-19 ESV)

While by the sheep we watched at night,

There shall the Child lie in a stall,
This Child who shall redeem us all.


This gift of God we’ll cherish well,
That ever joy our hearts shall fill.

…to redeem those who were under the law, so
that we might receive adoption as sons… 7So you

Carol #152 – I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth good will to men

I thought how as the day had come
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along the unbroken song


And in despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on earth I said
For hate is strong and mocks the song

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead nor doth He sleep
The wrong shall fail the right prevail
With peace on earth good will to men


Till ringing singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day
A voice a chime a chant sublime

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit
of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
[7] So you are no longer a slave, but a son,
and if a son, then an heir through God.

This is the sweet kiss of God upon the son. The
child talks to and about the Father on a different
level than he did as a slave or a child.

The Spirit cries out to God for us and in us.

The first usage of the word ABBA Father were
uttered by Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are
possible for you. Remove this cup from me.
Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
(Mark 14:36 ESV)
The Spirit of Christ could not bear the thought of
enduring sin. The sacrifice and ransom for sin was
great and it caused Christ to groan.

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to
fall back into fear, but you have received the
Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry,
“Abba! Father!” *16+ The Spirit himself bears
witness with our spirit that we are children of
God, [17] and if children, then heirs—heirs of
God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we
suffer with him in order that we may also be
glorified with him.(Romans 8:15-17 ESV)

Sealing work of the Spirit: Paul wrote in the letter
to the church at Ephesus that the Holy Spirit is the
seal or mark in our lives. The Spirit proves we are
God’s children
In him you also, when you heard the word of
truth, the gospel of your salvation, and
believed in him, were sealed with the promised
Holy Spirit, [14] who is the guarantee of our
inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to
the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14 ESV)
