The IRA was formed in 1969 to drive English authorities out of Northern Ireland through guerrilla warfare tactics. They targeted government buildings, officials, and military outposts with bombings, assassinations, and other attacks in order to unite Northern Ireland with Southern Ireland. After a ceasefire was announced in 1998, the divided nation is now at peace, though tensions remain as Ireland works towards being a fully united country.
