This document discusses different types of plant adaptations. It describes terrestrial plants that grow in various environments like plains, mountains, deserts, areas with heavy rainfall, swampy areas, and coastal regions. It also discusses aquatic plants like floating plants, fixed plants, and underwater plants. Insectivorous plants that trap insects are described along with non-green plants. Examples are provided for each category. The document concludes by listing some useful plants and their products.
2. Types of Plants
Terrestrial Plants
Plants that grow on land
Aquatic Plants
Plants that grow in water
Insectivorous Plants
Plants that are carnivorous in nature
Non- Green Plants

3. Terrestrial Plants
1. Plants in Plain
May have several branches.
They can survive in very hot climate, and may
shed most their leaves in autumn.
Example : Neem, Peepal, Gulmohar,

4. Terrestrial Plants
2.Plants on Mountains
These plants are usually tall, straight and
have a cone shape.
They are flowerless
They have cones with seeds inside them.
Leaves of these plants are needle-like
Have a waxy coating to prevent any
damage from snow.
Example: Pine, Deodar and Fir

Pine
5. Terrestrial Plants
3.Plants in Desert
They don ‘t any leaves or have very few of them.
Photosynthesis is carried out by the stems.
Most plants have thorns.
They store water in the stems, which become
fleshy.
Example :Cactus, date palms.

6. Terrestrial Plants
4 .Plants in area of Heavy rainfall
These plants have leaves that remain green almost
all year round, and are called evergreen trees.
Example : Rubber tree and teak tree
Smaller plants like sugarcane, rice, cotton, pepper also
grow here.

5. Plants in swampy Areas
Places where the soil is very sticky and clayey are
called marshy (swampy) areas.
It becomes very difficult for plants to grow here
because air cannot reach the roots. And have
breathing roots to take in air.
Example :Mangroves with breathing roots

8. Terrestrial Plants
6 .Plants on Sea Cost
They can survive on Salty water
Prefers area of heavy rainfall
Seeds are dispersed by water
Example : coconut tree

9. Aquatic Plants
1) Floating Plants:
These are light, spongy and float on the surface of the
water.
Duckweed Water hyacinth

10. Aquatic Plants
2) Fixed Plants:
Have roots which are fixed to the bottom of the pond.
Have long, hollow stem to reach the surface of the water.
Have broad and waxy coated leaves to prevent them from
rotting. Example : Lotus, Water Lily
3) Underwater Plants
These have narrow leaves without any stomata.
They breathe through the surface and keep the water clean
Example :tape grass, pond weed

11. Insectivorous Plants
Plants are carnivorous in nature.
Their leaves are modified to trap insects
www.reflectivelearn.com
(Venus Flytrap)
• Venus fly trap has leaves that are
like boxes with hinges.
• They have long hair along the
edges.
• When an insect touches the hair,
the leaf snaps shut, trapping the
creature inside
(Pitcher plant)
• Pitcher plant, leaves are in the form
of a container or pitcher with a lid to
cover the mouth
12. Non Green Plants
They do not have chlorophyll
Example : Indian pipe ,coral root
Saprophytic plants : Plants that
cannot make their own food and
absorb food from dead plants and
animals .
