2. Lighting
Abusive relationship/ realism scenes-
■ Natural lighting will be used. The intention is to create realistic
scenes of a violent relationship thus using natural lighting will
enhance the verisimilitude of the scenes, in turn allowing the
audience to be more affected by the narrative.
■ In addition to this we will add a grainy filter and low saturation in the
post production phase, this will enhance the sense of desolation we
want to convey in our character.
Idealistic/ 1950’s relationship scenes-
■ Due to the lack of equipment we have, we would most likely have to
use natural lighting and any other light sources that you would find in
a home (main lights and lamps). We want these scenes to appear
brighter and more saturated (orange tinted lighting) this conveys a
more dreamlike nature to the scene and will help to distinguish the
difference between the realism and idealism.
3. Colours
Real life sequences-
■ In both the costumes and the setting (props and background) the colour shown will
be dull and dreary. As it’s a minimal budget production we don’t have the time or the
money to change the setting completely (i.e. a grey painted kitchen to a yellow
kitchen to contrast the scenes) however the changes that we can make to the
lighting and filters should compensate for this.
■ Although the settings will be hard to change the colors of the clothing can determine
the difference of the time and the emotions felt in the characters.
■ Ryan will wear a plain scruffy suit. The bland colors illustrates the lack of emotion he
feels and the depressive emotions towards his relationship.
■ To contrast this Robyn will wear a red flannelled shirt with plain jeans. The red
signifies the passion and love that she still feels, although its ambiguous as it could
also illustrate the danger and pain that comes from being in the relationship.
Dream like sequences-
■ The colours used generally in these scenes will be bright and fun, to enrich the
fantasy feeling. We have ideas of paints dripping down her face, this is simplistic but
effective as the abstract feel enhances the idea of the dream and the romantic daze.
■ In terms of clothing robyns dress will be red, we have purposely chosen for robyn to
be wearing the same colour in the of the sequences as it reflects how her love and
passion is in both the relationships but its tinted in real life with the fear of pain and
anger.
4. Locations
■ we have chosen as the main location to be a
house to illustrate how it is a marriage. In
addition it’s a familiar place to the audience
and so they may be able to relate to it more; it
enhances the realism.
■ Different scenes will be shot in different areas
of the house i.e. we have ideas for a kitchen
scene, and a shot when they’re in the
bedroom looking into a mirror
■ However to contrast this and so there is more
variation in the video we have chosen
locations which are outdoors. i.e. the lido,
looking out to the lake, in a field and hopefully
we may even shoot some scenes in London.
■ We feel its important to create diversity not
only in the characters, costume and different
shots but also the location as this will help
engage the audience
5. Robyn- modern day
■ She will wear a red flannelled shirt with
plain or ripped blue jeans and converse
■ This is typical modern day fashion so it is
also used as a hint to the audience that it’s
a different time.
■ The reason for the colour was described
previously; the ambiguity illustrates that
the love and passion is tinted by fear of
pain and anger.
■ Its not formal which illustrates the
difference in the era and also the
relationship- she doesn’t have time or
money to dress fancy.
6. Robyn- 1950’s
relationship
■ Robyn will wear a red 50’s style
stress in the dream scenes. Her hair
will be done in an up-do and her
make up will be minimalistic but with
a popping red lip.
■ The reason for the red was
described earlier; to illustrate love
and passion.
■ The reason for this dress choice is
to distinguish the difference
between the modern day realism
and the dream 1950’s sequence.
■ The use of costume in a music
video is vital in determining the
difference in time, there is no
dialogue to give hints to the
audience and so all hints are given
through the changes in the mise en
scene, in particular the costume to
show that the time has shifted.
7. Robyn- Performance
■ Besides the scenes of the modern day
and 50’s there are elements of
performance in the video.
■ The costumes we’ve decided on for
these scenes are relatively plain, for
example a white or cream dress . Not
only does this contrast the red
passionate colour it also represents the
innocence and purity in the
performance.
■ We want this element of the video to
illustrate the authenticity and realness
of our character. We felt that we
wanted the performance aspect of it to
be separate from the narrative to
enhance the emotional drive behind the
lyrics and the use of more plain,
stripped back costume would help
enhance the rawness.
8. Robyn-Performance
■ Another look we’d like to include is
a ‘biker chick’ image. During parts
of the lip syncing, she’ll wear all
black, with a black leather jacket
and wear her hair in a scruffy pony
tail. Including this look creates
versatility within the video, it keeps
the audience engaged. A teenage
audience of females pay a lot of
attention to the outfits that people
wear in music videos as such its
important to include as much
diversity as to not bore the
audience.
9. Ryan-1950s relationship
■ Ryan will wear a formal
black and white suit.
■ This is typical of a middle
class business man in the
50’s and it illustrates the
hardworking husband
character we want to
portray in this stylized
relationship.
■ His hair will be slick and
most likely gelled back.
10. Ryan- Modern day
■ He will wear a scruffy white shirt
untucked from grey or black
trousers with a normal pair of men's
smart shoes.
■ This again shows the audience that
is modern.
■ This will illustrate that his character
is careless and dirty. It hopefully will
give of a character who is working
hard for money but is stuck in a
dead end job and can’t support his
family; which perhaps creates the
uproar of their relationship.
■ We still want to portray a man who
goes to work and not just a
domestically violent reckless man
which was the reason we chose for
him to wear a suit rather than jeans
and a vest top.
11. Make-up
■ Performance:
Robyn's make up will be
general/minimal, to show a more natural
look, emphasizing the authenticity.
In addition to this there is a scene we
want to incorporate when she has half a
face dripping in bright coloured paints
and the other half covered in bruises.
This conveys the juxtaposition between
her dream and reality in a more symbolic
image.
■ 1950’s
It'll be a simple make up look, with a red
lip and rosy pink cheeks.
■ Modern day
This will also be simplistic, almost bare
faced.
We will also use special effects make up
to create the bruises and cuts from the
abusive relationship.
