3. CHOOSE LOCATION
Choosing the location for patchouli cultivation is quite
simple. Just take note of the following steps and
requirements :
1. High Ground

4. HIGH GROUND
50-400 metres
The most suitable location for patchouli
cultivation should be about 50 to 400-metre-
high above sea level (mdpl), in order for
patchouli to have a high level of oil content and
a good level of alcohol content.

5. TEMPERATURE
High temperature & humidity
Patchouli plant needs high and humid
temperature .

6. SUNLIGHT
Full sunlight
Fully-grown patchouli requires enough sunlight
so try to find a location that is not shielded by
tall trees.

7. SOIL
Fertile, well drained soil
Choose a location that has fertile and crumbly soil,
contains plenty of natural nutrient, and where the
water is not stagnant in the area.

8. NEARBY DISTILLERY
Less than 25km from distillery
Choose a location that has a nearby distillery for
premium patchouli >30% PA for higher dry leaf
prices.

10. LEARN NURSERY METHOD
Learn cuttings skill from expert
Patchouli nursery is done by cutting (stek) method on the
stem and branch of a good and chosen parent plant. Before
cutting, learn how to do it well from The Department of
Agriculture's instructors or from other local experts.

11. SEEDLINGS
Select seedlings with good growth and
no disease.
Seedlings are taken from a plant which has good growth and is free
of diseases. Patchouli seedlings obtained from the cutting method
can be directly planted in the plantation area, but it is better to grow
the seed first using a polybag. Selecting a good patchouli parent
plant is very important in the patchouli cultivation.

12. PARENT PLANTS
Cutting branch/stem diameter of
about 0.8 - 1 cm
Choose a patchouli parent plant which comes from
local Patchouli variety with good growth. Choose a
patchouli parent plant stems which has a branch
diameter for cutting of about 0.8 - 1 cm.

13. ROOT STIMULANT
Cutting stem length 15-25 cm;
root stimulant 5 minutes; leave for 15 days.
The length of a cut branch is approx. 15 - 25 cm and has at least six buds.
Remove all the leaves except 4 small leaves on the top, soak the tip of
the seedling stem - where the root is supposed to grow later - in a root
stimulating organic liquid fertilizer for 5 minutes. Then tie the seedlings
together with 50 - 100 other patchouli seed ling stems and leave for 15
days.

14. POLYBAG
10 kg soil; 12.5 kg husk; 2.5 kg sand &
10 kg animal compost. Period 2 months
When the root and the leaves start to grow, move the seed into a
polybag filled with the following evenly-mixed materials: 10 kg of
soil, 12.5 kg of husk, 2.5 kg of sand, and 10 kg of animal
compost. Grow the seed in the polybag for 2 months at most.

15. SHADE
Slanted shade house 180-cm-120cm
high
Place the polybag under a seedbed shade house. Prepare a
seedbed in the shape of a shade house which is 180-cm-high on
the east side and 120-cm-high on the west side to let the
sunlight to shine in. Cover the top of the shade house with leaves
or plastic net so the sunlight does not shine directly on to the
seed.

16. PREPARE LAND
Preparing the land for patchouli
cultivation requires the following steps:
1. Clear Land
2. Prune Trees
3. Drainage

17. CLEAR LAND
Clear grass and shrubs
Clear the land from grass and shrub. Collect the waste
from the clearing process in one place but do not burn
them.

18. PRUNE TREES
Prune surrounding trees
Cut the branches and leaves of tall trees around
the area so they do not block the sunlight and the
fully-grown patchouli gets plenty of sunlight.

19. DRAINAGE
Dig drainage trench if necessary.
If the planting area is located in a flat terrain, it is
better to make a trench/drainage to avoid
stagnant water in the area. For an area located in a
sloping land, trench/drainage is not necessary.

20. GROWING PATCHOULI
Simple cultivation and High Selling Price
Patchouli plants which produce essential
oil are easy to cultivate and have a high
selling price at selected distilleries.
To obtain good quality essential oil, farmers need to focus
on the seedling quality and perform maintenance on a
regular basis, especially during the harvesting and
distillation periods.
Patchouli can be harvested every 2 - 3 months, which
makes growing patchouli a very good alternative for a BOP
family's additional source of income in selected areas.
