Grade 6
Lesson Outcomes

sentence.
What is a ‘Modal’?
A modal verb is a type of auxiliary
verb that is usually used with
another verb to express ideas
such as possibility, necessity, and
permission
They give additional information
about the function of the main
verb that follows it.
ModalVerbs
The negative forms
of modal verbs are
often contracted.
Negatives are
formed by adding
‘not’ after the
modal verbs.

moment?
Habits or things we usually do or did in the
past.

.
Structure of Modal Verb
Writing sentences with modal verbs is very easy for several reasons.
1. We always use the modal verb after the subject and before the main verb.
She/he/I/we/ shall / should/ will / would eat the vegetables.
2.We do not use any auxiliary verb with the modals.
We can use short forms.
I/you/he/she/we/they shouldn’t/shan’t/won’t/wouldn’t eat sweets.
Structure of Modal Verb
3. In interrogative sentences modal verbs come first followed by the subject and
the main verb.
Should I/you/he/she/we/they eat sweets?
Shall I/we help? (used only in the first person singular and plural.)
Will I/you/he/she/we/they be home early tomorrow?
Would you like to help? (used only with second person)
Fill in the blanks with suitable modals
1.I ___________ write a letter on Monday.
2.I _____________get paid more for the hard work that I do .
3.Mom thinks you ___________clean your room.
4._________ we get ready by ten?
5.Nicky thought she __________ be late for the meeting so she took a taxi
from the station.
