2.1 – The importance of taking good nutrition & practising good eating habits

The amount of chemical energy stored in food is called its calorific value.
Calorific value is usually measured in calories (cal) or kilocalories (kcal),[object Object]

An instrument which is commonly used to measure the calorific value of food is the bomb calorimeter shown in Photograph 2.2 and Figure 2.1.,[object Object]
Factors that Affect Our Calorie Requirements depend - ,[object Object]

sex
state of health
temperature of the surroundings,[object Object]
The body size of a person depends on the number of cells in the person's body.  When the number of cells in the body increases, the body size gets bigger.  As every body cell requires energy to function properly and stay alive, a person with a larger body size will have a higher calorie requirement.

This is because children and teenagers undergo rapid growth and have high metabolic rates.
When adults get older, they stop growing and their metabolic rates drop.,[object Object]
