In this part of the presentation
(2nd Unit) it is shown the way Geophysical
studies are performed.
Actually one can see how Geophysicists
arrived to get the answer to the question:
What could be inside the Earth ?

6-Massa e Densità della Terra 6-Mass and Density of the Earth
In particular the data acquisition, the
computations, the interpretation and the
integration of other information are
summarized step by step.
This is the Planetary Geophysics,
that follows same workflow of the
Applied Geophysics, so it is a good
example
In particolare vengono riassunti passo
dopo passo l’acquisizione dei dati, i
calcoli, l’interpretazione e l’integrazione
con altre informazioni
Si tratta di Geofisica Planetaria, che
segue lo stesso flusso di lavoro della
Geofisica Applicata, quindi è un buon
esempio

A Geophysical problem:
compute the Earth mass and density
Assuming we have a body of
mass “m” on the surface of
the Earth it will be attracted by
a force F = g x m = weight
Mass = the quantity of matter in a body
regardless of its volume or of any forces
acting on it. It should not be confused with
weight, which is the measure of the force of
gravity acting on a body.
g is the acceleration the Earth
attraction applies to a body
= 9.81 m/s2 = 981 Gals
Gal = galileo = CGS unit of
acceleration = 1 cm/s2
2a UNITA’ - Geofisica Planetaria 2nd UNIT – Planetary Geophysics
Terrestre. Esso sarà attratto da
una forza F = g x m = peso
g è l’accelerazione che
l’attrazione terrestre applica al
corpo = 9.81 m/s2 = 981 Gals
Gal = galileo = unità di
accelerazione CGS = 1 cm/s2
Density = ratio of the mass of a substance
to its volume, expressed, for example,
in units of grams per cubic centimeter.
The average density of an object equals
its total mass divided by its total volume.

2a UNITA’ - Geofisica Planetaria 2nd UNIT – Planetary Geophysics
Era una bilancia di torsione
orizzontale sospesa, con 2
sfere di piombo alle estremità.
Lo scopo di Cavendish era misurare la
densità (peso specifico) della Terra, o
il peso del Mondo come lui scrisse
usando una terminologia obsoleta.
L’esperimento fu ideato alcuni anni
prima dal geologo John Michell che
costruì l’apparato per eseguirlo.
Cavendish fece alcune modifiche per
migliorare il congegno.
Cavendish aimed for a measure of the
density (specific gravity) of the Earth, or
the weight of the World as he wrote using
an obsolete terminology.
The experiment was devised some years
before by geologist John Michell who
constructed the apparatus for it.
Cavendish made some changes to it to
improve the device.

prodotta.
Poiché l’attrazione
gravitazionale della Terra
sulle due sfere minori si
poteva misurare pesandole,
si ottenne la massa e la
densità della Terra dal
rapporto fra le due forze.
Cavendish fu il primo ad
ottenere dei risultati
accurati.
The faint attraction of the balls to two bigger
spheres (weights) placed alongside the
beam was detectable by the deflection it
caused.
Since the gravitational
force of the Earth on the
small balls could be
measured directly by
weighing them, the ratio
of the two forces allowed
the mass and the density
of the Earth to be calculated.
Cavendish was the first
to obtain accurate results.

Actually the torsion beam was
enclosed inside a wooden case to
defend it from the movement of air.
The wire that holds the arm was
connected through an endless screw
to a bar that could be rotated with a
pulley operated by two cables in order
to calibrate the arm of the beam.
A small window was created on both
ends of the case to unable the
measurement of the faint
deflection of the arm which
was performed with the
help of a vernier.
In realtà la bilancia fu racchiusa in una
cassa di legno a difenderla dal movimento
dell'aria.

The whole apparatus was placed inside
a room and operated remotely to avoid
the air, the temperature and also the
operator to affect the measurements.
They lasted some months to test the
tiny attraction that was less than
1/50 000 000 of the weight of the balls.
The influence of the temperature and of
the magnetic attraction were tested.
The wire with the right stiffness was
found by trials.
Observations were made with a
telescope through holes on the walls on
opposite sides of the room and the
graduations were illuminated by lamps
placed outside the room through other
holes. The suspension of the weights
was designed to be able to move them
apart and to alternate their position on
both sides of the balls.
L'intero apparato fu posto all'interno di
una stanza e azionato a distanza per
evitare che l'aria, la temperatura e
anche l'operatore influenzassero le
misurazioni. Esse durarono alcuni mesi
per testare la piccola attrazione che era
meno di 1/50 000 000 del peso delle
sfere. Furono testate l'influenza della
temperatura e dell’attrazione
magnetica.
lampade collocate all'esterno della
camera attraverso altri fori. La
sospensione dei pesi fu progettata per
poterli allontanare e alternare la loro
posizione su entrambi i lati delle sfere.

To get the mass of the Earth
we can start from Newton’s law
of the attraction of the bodies.
F = (G x M x m)
d2
M
m
d
G is the gravitational constant.
The Cavendish experiment was the first to
implicitly yield accurate value for this constant.
G = 6.67 x 10-11 kg-1 m3 s-1
2a UNITA’ - Geofisica Planetaria 2nd UNIT – Planetary Geophysics
Per ottenere la massa della Terra
possiamo partire dalla legge di
Newton sull’attrazione dei Corpi.
F = (G x M x m)
d2 d=distanza
M=massa della Terra
d=distance
M=Earth mass
Assuming we have a body of mass “m”
on the surface of the Earth the Newton’s
Law of the attraction of the bodies is:
F = G x M x m / r -2
r

Earth
G x M x m g x m

That force is the weight of that body
so it is equivalent to: F = g x m
Assumendo di avere un corpo di massa
“m” sulla superfice della Terra, la Legge
di Newton sulla attrazione dei corpi è:
F = G x M x m / r -2
quindi è equivalente a: F = g x m

Furono fatte diverse
teorie per giustificare le
densità necessarie per
ottenere l’alto valore
calcolato.
Tra queste furono

Several theories were
made to justify the

calculated.
Among these Models of
the Earth with metallic
core were proposed
given that only certain
metals can have those
specific weights, and
also based on
additional information
about the composition
of the Meteorites.
Meteorites are stony or metallic objects that
have fallen to Earth from space. Most
meteorites apparently come from asteroids,
but a small number come from the Moon or
Mars.
I meteoriti sono oggetti pietrosi o metallici
che sono caduti sulla Terra dallo spazio.
La maggior parte forse proviene dagli
asteroidi, ma un piccolo numero proviene
dalla Luna o da Marte.

There are some Meteorites with
unique chemical composition:
1-Achondrites are similar to
terrestrial mafic igneous rocks
and sometimes are brecciated.
Probably represent crustal
material of planets-asteroids.
2-Iron meteorites with
intergrowths of iron-nickel are
thought to be the core material
of one or more planets that
subsequently broke up.
3-Stony iron meteorites are
thought to have originated in
the boundary zone above the
core regions where iron
meteorites originated.
Hypothesis:
The second type of meteorite
could be similar in composition
to the inner part of the Earth
(high density).
2a UNITA’ - Geofisica Planetaria 2nd UNIT – Planetary Geophysics
Ci sono dei Meteoriti con tipica
composizione chimica:
1-Acondriti sono simili alle
rocce magmatiche mafiche
terrestri. Talvolta sono brecciati.
Probabilmente è materiale
crostale di pianeti-asteroidi.
2-Meteoriti ferrosi with
accrescimenti interni di ferro-
nichel. Si pensa siano materiale
del nucleo di uno o più pianeti
che si sono frantumati.
3-Metoeriti rocciose-ferrose. Si
pensa provengano dalla zona
marginale attorno alla zona del
nucleo dal quale arriverebbero I
meteoriti ferrosi.
Ipotesi:
Il secondo tipo di meteorite
potrebbe avere composizione
simile alla parte interna della
Terra (alta densità).
