4. OSS: Definition
Open-source software (OSS) is computer software
that is available in source code form for which the
source code and certain other rights normally
reserved for copyright holders are provided under a
software license that permits users to study, change,
and improve the software.
The license has to comply to the Open Source
Definition given by Open Source Initiative (OSI).
5. Definition by OSI
The Criteria for Open Source is as follows :
1. Free Redistribution
2. Source Code
3. Derived Works
4. Integrity of The Author's Source Code
5. No Discrimination Against Persons or Groups
6. No Discrimination Against Fields of Endeavor
7. Distribution of License
8. License Must Not Be Specific to a Product
9. License Must Not Restrict Other Software
10. License Must Be Technology-Neutral
6. Free Software
●Free Software Refers to the software that provides the following
freedoms :
●The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
●The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to
make it do what you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code
is a precondition for this.
●The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor
(freedom 2).
●The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to
others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole
community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the
source code is a precondition for this.
7. Free Software & OSS
●Free Software - Free as in free speech, not free
Beer.
●Freedom to ? - Share , Study , Modify
●According to Stallman - Few Licenses in Open
Source Restrict users in ”development of
software”
●Open Source Considers only their underlying
criteria for their compliance, whereas free
software considers whether a device would let
you run the program or not.
8. Community Driven Software
●Cathedral and Bazaar
●Cathedral – Propritory Software – Microsoft ,
Apple , Oracle . Finely Developed in Isolation
●Bazaar Model – Open Source, Free Software.
Many People, Different Perspectives, Common
Goal.
●People around the globe collaborate .
●Bound by common goal , rules, policies.
●Different Perspectives
9. Why Should We Use It?
●More Secure and Devoid of Viruses
●Better Stability
●Availability of wide range of development tools
●Updated and Supported
●No Piracy
●All Drivers Available
●Bugs Get Fixed Actively
●Chage according to your will
●Use it in your local language
10. Commercial Open Source
●Red Hat Enterprise Linux
●Suse Enterprise Edition
●OpenExchange Enterprise
●Xtuple ERP
●Landscape
●Dim Dim
●Star Office
11. Business Models
●Support and Service Models (Ubuntu)
●Free and Enterprise Versions (MySQL, Red
Hat)
●SaaS model (Dim Dim)
●Products around Open Source (Amanda -
MySQL, Ubuntu – Landscape )
12. Where to meet people?
●Linux User Groups – LUGs are local area
groups.
●FSF Chapters statewise
●Local Groups Like Twincling in AP
●Tech Specific groups, like Python User
Groups, Ruby User Groups, Lua User
