The Jahoda Reference Model
Step 1: Receive Query: How old was President Johnson when he died?

Step 2: Message Selection:

Wanted term: How old

Given term:
President Johnson
died

Step 3: Query negotiation:

(Q1) When you say President, do you mean President of the United States? Step 4: Select Category of Answer-Providing Tool/ Why chosen
Almanac: This category provides excellent information about Presidents. The birth and death of a President will undoubtedly be found in this reference.
5. Step 5: Select Specific title of Answer-Providing Tool/ Why
The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2009. Pleasantville, NY: World Almanac Books, 2009.
This edition was the most current available in the Boerne Middle School North Library. I was aware that President Lyndon Johnson was President after the assassination of President Kennedy in NOV 1963. Because a President can only be President for a total of 10 years, the information should be available in the 2009 edition.
6. Tool Search Strategy:
The received query was “How old was President Johnson at his death?”. Although the query is stated as a “how” question it is understood to be a “who” question (President Johnson). I started my search in the World Almanac and Book of Facts 2009. I began my search by finding Presidents of the United States in the Contents area of the almanac. On page 516 the Presidents of the United States are listed in the order they were elected President. I discovered President Johnson was the 36th President of the United States. I then found the autobiographical data on President Lyndon Johnson. President Johnson was born on August 27, 1908 and died on January 22, 1973. By subtracting 1908 from 1973, I concluded that President Johnson would have turned 65 on August 27, 1973. I determined that President Johnson was 64 years old at the time of his death.
Step 7: Translation of Language of Answer – Providing Tool into Language of Query:
Perfect Fit/ Match. In query negotiation, President is determined to be President of the United States. Also in query negotiation, it is determined that President Johnson is President Lyndon B. Johnson. Since there is a birth date provided and a date of death provided, the question “How old was President Johnson when he died” can be determined precisely.
Step 8: Patron Satisfaction: Yes
