2. Federal Initiatives
• PL 101-476 mandates that all schools must provide
transition services for all students with disabilities
• The federal government defines Transition Services –
a coordinated set of activities for a student, designed
within an outcome-oriented process, which promotes
movement form school to post-school activities,
including post-secondary education, vocational
training, integrated employment (including supported
employment), continuing and adult education, adult
services, independent living, or community
participation.

• Supported Employment – a method of
integrating people with disabilities who
cannot work independently into competitive
employment
• It includes use of an employment specialist or
job coach, who helps the person with a
disability function on the job

• Job coach – is a person who assists adult
workers with disabilities (especially those with
mental retardation), providing vocational
assessment , instruction, overall planning and
interaction assistance with employers, family,
and related government and service agencies
5. Issues on Transition
• Students with severe disabilities – focuses on
the coordination and linkage of the many
agencies outside the school setting
• Students with mild disabilities – the concern
centers on attempting to meet their academic
as well as their vocational needs
6. Inclusive Education
• Inclusive education happens when children
with and without disabilities participate and
learn together in the same classes.
• All children belong.
• All children learn in different ways.
• It is every child's right to be included.

• Parents' visions of a typical life for their
children can come true.
