I just had the opportunity of presenting at the inaugural 'World Congress on Access to Post-Secondary Education' in Montreal. It was my first attempt at a synthesis of four projects that the Pearson Think Tank is involved in; on rising tuition fees, school-based careers guidance, university admissions and open education data. In different ways all of these projects explore the 'wicked problem' (complex, evolving and interdependent) of fair access to higher education. The work highlights three of the common barriers that restrict fair access to higher education; 1) Information asymmetry 2) Unequal distribution of resources 3) Variable and sometimes unequal access As well as three potential solutions that have been developed over the course of the projects: 1) Deliver truly personalised information and support 2) Develop sustainable local learning ecosystems 3) Make appropriate use of open data This is an emerging strand of thinking so please do share your feedback.

Introduction This study describes the intellectual landscape of iSchools and examines how the various iSchools map onto these research areas. Method The primary focus of the data collection process was on faculty members’ current research interests as described by the individuals themselves. A co-word analysis of all iSchool faculty members’ research interests was used as a research method. The relations between the current research profiles of the iSchools were compared by calculating the cosine similarity between co-word profiles and visualized in network graphs. Results The results show that the iSchools still contain many dominant themes from LIS, but have an expanded conceptual landscape with the introduction of new iSchools. The methods used for data collection guaranteed the most current data available (in contrast to using publications) and the methods used for analyses gave multiple perspectives to the research landscape of the iSchools. Conclusions The results of the present study showed how the current research landscape of the iSchools and the shared research interests were built by many topics that still reflect dominant LIS topics (e.g., bibliometrics, information retrieval, and information seeking behaviour), but that there are also growing areas that reflect the iSchools’ interdisciplinary composition, thus answering the research questions.

Abstract: Data mining is typically associated with business and marketing. For example, Amazon uses people's past purchases to suggest books they might be interested in buying. Similarly, academic analytics can be used to identify and predict students who might be at risk, by analyzing demographic and performance data of former students. However, there is no clear consensus on how to intervene with current students in a way they will accept and not associate with academic "profiling." Why should students think they are exceptions to our rules? This panel presentation will share how three institutions are approaching this problem and provide an overview of related issues.

Present scenario, E-learning resources gain access to classrooms around the world at an extremely rapid pace. In the wake of this influx, educators face growing challenges as they teach a much “wired” and more and more “wireless” generation of students using technology that is evolving every day. This paper deals with the electronic resources (E-Resources) and their different types. The information seeking behavior of students, researchers and faculty in the electronic milieu are thrashing out in detail, looks at the E- resources created by some organizations are highlighted for access. The main objective of the present Study is to find out the study on E-learning Resources Access and Academic Performance among Under Graduate Students. Normative Survey method was adopted to collect the relevant data for the present study. The tool E-learning Resources Scale (ELRAS) developed and standardized by S. Raja kumar and P. Pachaiyappan, was used to collect data for the present study. The Researcher randomly selected 330 Under Graduate Students studying in Government, Government Aided and Private Colleges in and around Vellore and Thiruvallur District of Tamilnadu. The result existing study was done in order to find the E-Learning Resources Access and Academic Performance of under Graduate Students on the whole it perceived the data explores several factors which are significant in parenteral annual income of E-learning Resources Access and the study Academic performance is significant in Stream and E-device using hours of undergraduate students. This project examines the effectiveness of applying machine learning techniques to the realm of college student success, specifically with the intent of discovering and identifying those student characteristics and factors that show the strongest predictive capability with regards to successful graduation. The student data examined consists of first time freshmen and transfer students who matriculated at California State University San Marcos in the period of Fall 2000 through Fall 2010 and who either graduated successfully or discontinued their education. Operating on over 30,000 student observations, random forests are used to determine the relative importance of the student characteristics with genetic algorithms to perform feature selection and pruning. To improve the machine learning algorithm cross validated hyperparameter tuning was also implemented. Overall predictive strength is relatively high as measured by the Matthews Correlation Coefficient, and both intuitive and novel features which provide support for the learning model are explored.

Plagiarism, Internet and Academic Success at the University. Journal of New Approaches in Educational Research, 7 (2), 89-104. In this article, the authors determined the degree to which the students relied on internet and technologies and how this practice influenced their academic achievements. They also determined the rates of interactions and the experiences on the level at which students egage in plagiarism practices at the university level. A total of 10, 952 students were used as study participants and their classification in the study was based on the level of their experience, the interaction level with educators and coursemates, and how they apply technologies in education. Based on this study, it is clear that internet usage for research work does not necessarily mean that there will be plagiarism on the student work. However, the level of plagiarism is determined by the manner or how perfect the student is using internet technology. This study is therefore useful for this research topic since it shows that research methods of students and plagiarism on the student paper is influenced by hours required by the learners to look for facts from the internet and total academic videos watched by the students. The quality of work and plagiarism-free paper is influenced by the dedication and hours used by the students while looking for facts from the internet. Anney, N. V., & Mosha, A. M. (2015). WHY DO LEARNERS CHOOSE ONLINE LEARNING: THE LEARNERS’ VOICES Hale Ilgaz and Yasemin Gulbahar Ankara University, Distance Education Center, 06830 Golbasi, Ankara, Turkey ABSTRACT Offering many advantages to adult learners, e-Learning is now being recognized - and preferred - by more and more people, resulting in an increased number of distance learners in recent years. Numerous research studies focus on learner preferences for online learning, with most converging around the individual characteristics and differences, if not the features of the technology and pedagogy used. For Turkey, the situation is also similar, with the number of adult learners who prefer online learning increasing each year due to several reasons. The result of this is an increase in the number of online programs offered by many universities. Hence, this research study has been conducted to reveal the prevailing factors causing learners to choose online learning. Through this qualitative research regarding online learners in a state university, it is found that having a full time job, accessibility and flexibility, individual responsibility, effective time management, physical distance, institutional prestige, disability are the common factors for under graduate and graduate learners in their preference for online learning. Awareness of these factors can support the stakeholders while designing e-Learning from both technological and pedagogical points of view. KEYWORDS Online learning, preferences, expectations 1. INTRODUCTION Offering many advantages to adult learners, e-Learning is now being recognized - and preferred - by more and more people, resulting in an increased number of distance learners in recent years. Emphasizing that distance education has a bright and promising future, Zawacki-Richter and Naidu (2016) stress that, “In fact, there has never been a better time to be in the field of open, flexible, distance and online education than now!” (p. 20). The commonly discussed factors that make online learning attractive for adults are: independence from time and place; accessibility, and; economic reasons. With the MOOC movement, extremely high quality online courses are now being delivered to learners by many well-known universities. Moreover, many universities are either providing online programs or courses as a support to traditional instruction, in the form of blended learning, flipped classes, etc. Indeed, there are almost no universities left who don’t benefit from these advantages of technology usage and its support in teaching-learning processes. A variety of reasons might account for these learning preferences. Çağlar and Turgut (2014) attempted to identify the effective factors for the e-learning preferences of university students; they concluded that, “Efficient usage of time and reduced educational expenses were found to be on top of the list as the most valued advantages of e-learning” (p. 46). ...

Social media is a web-based service that gives individual the opportunity to create either a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, furthermore it’s add a list of others with which they share a connection, view their list of connections and those made within the system. Therefore, this study is aim at examining the impact of use of social networking on students’ academic performance in Federal University Gashua. In other to measure social media platforms a questionnaire was developed based on past literatures. The independent variables includes: time appropriateness, time duration, Nature of Usage and type of social networking, while the dependent variable is student CGPA. The sample of 130 students from Department of computer science was selected using convenient sampling method. The data collected was analyzed using description means python programming. Thus considering the abnormal use of Social networking platforms by students, it is expedient that Federal University Gashua educate their students to positively use these platforms for educational purposes which will eventually result in a positive impact on their academic performance.
