platypus
The platypus is among natures most unlikely
animals. In fact the first scientist to examine a
specimen believed they were the victims of a
hoax. The animal is best described as a
hodgepodge (a weird combination). Males are
venomous and have sharp stingers on eh heels of
their rear feet, this enables them to deliver a
strong blow on any of their enemies
3. Habitat
The platypus can be found all fresh water
creeks, lakes or rivers in eastern Australia.It
can be found in 26 of 31 river systems in
victoria.
4. Prey
The platypus is a carnivore and has a diet of
shrimp
crayfish
earthworms
mealworms
mayflies and dragonflies
mussels
Trout and frog eggs
tadpoles and small fish
5. Predator
Platypus have few enemies in the wild like
Red foxes
Human
Feral cat
Snakes
water rats
goannas
spotted quolls
Hawks
Eels , owls and eagle
6. Adaptation feature
Webbed feet with a retracting webbed membrane which can expose the claws, enabling the
platypus to effectively dig burrows
A flat, beaver-like tail which acts as a rudder
2 eye lids for protection
Its bill is equipped with extremely sensitive electroreceptor to find food such as insect larvae,
snail,worms,small fish and crustaceans
The platypus can remain underwater for between one and five minutes dense,waterproof fur
Males have poisonous spurs on hind legs to harm or kill predators
The liver gets rid of water but stores fat
