Malaria epidemiology:
• Globally, 3.3 billion at risk of malaria*
• ~219 million (154M-289M) cases/year, 79% in sub-Saharan Africa
• 90% of these cases are caused by P. falciparum
• ~660,000 (490K-896K) deaths/year, 90% in sub-Saharan Africa

3. 2006 Malaria vaccine community goal
Strategic Goal * : To develop an 80%
efficacious malaria vaccine by 2025 that
would provide protection for at least four
years
– Landmark Goal: To develop and license
a first-generation malaria vaccine that has
protective efficacy of more than 50%
against severe disease and death and
lasts longer than one year
