- UNESCO currently has three global initiatives related to water, the primary one being IHE, the Institute for Water Education. UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education - based in Delft, the Netherlands - Largest international post-graduate water education institution in the world - only institution w/in UN system to confer accredited MSc and PhD degrees. - Since 1957, the Institute has provided postgraduate education to more than 15,000 water professionals from 162 countries - vast majority of whom come from the developing world, with three years experience before applying . - Subjects range from urban waste management systems and water conflict management to water treatment and water transportation and distribution. - The goal of the Institute is to develop the capacities of professionals in developing and emerging countries, enabling people to effectively solve their water issues . - Student population represents on average about 70 countries at any given time, approximately 98% of whom return to their home countries after completing the program, with the remaining 2% usually going to other developing/emerging countries. 87% are still active in the water sector 10 years after graduation.

- Why partner with UNESCO-IHE? - UNESCO-IHE and TRF share an interest in increasing access to graduate education for water professionals from developing and emerging countries and to develop leaders and change agents to improve the standards of water and sanitation globally, all toward impacting global water and sanitation challenges. - additionally, these scholarships will partially fill the void left by ending the scholarship fund pool for low income countries - Focusing on graduate degree programs represents a strategic long-term investment in water and sanitation, as students are equipped with the research, managerial, and technical skills needed to deal with challenges in those fields in their countries. - The strategic partnership between TRF and UNESCO-IHE will directly support the goals of the Water and Sanitation Area of Focus by supporting the education of professionals studying in fields related to water and sanitation who will have long-term impact on the global challenges of access to water and sanitation, strengthening systems, and educating communities.
- UNESCO-IHE Packaged Global Grants: Scholarships for Water and Sanitation Professionals at UNESCO-IHE - Through this partnership, eight scholarships will be awarded annually for graduate students at UNESCO-IHE’s Delft campus in the Netherlands. - Scholarships are available to students admitted to 3 select UNESCO-IHE Master of Science degree-granting programs. The three eligible programs are: - Municipal Water and Infrastructure, which includes topics such as water supply, urban water engineering, and sanitation - Water Management, which includes topics such as water conflict management, water quality, and water resource management - Water Science and Engineering, which includes topics such as flood risk management, river basin development, water development, and water productivity. - The first academic year (beginning in the fall of 2012) that these scholarships will be available coincides with the last year of the Future Vision pilot. Therefore, only students from pilot areas and sponsoring clubs and districts in the Future Vision pilot are eligible to apply in 2012. In 2013-14, when Future Vision will launch, the scholarships will be available globally. Rotarians will have the opportunity to interview and recommend students for scholarships for Master of Science degree-granting programs at UNESCO-IHE. The three eligible programs are: - Municipal Water and Infrastructure, which includes topics such as water supply, urban water engineering, and sanitation - Water Management, which includes topics such as water conflict management, water quality, and water resource management - Water Science and Engineering, which includes topics such as flood risk management, river basin development, water development, and water productivity.
- - Pilot Rotary clubs or districts in the home country of the student will serve as the international sponsor of the grant, which will help to build long-term connections in the student’s home country - The entire financial cost of these scholarships will be covered by The Rotary Foundation and UNESCO-IHE. This gives the Rotarian sponsors the opportunity to focus all their resources on developing a long term relationship with the scholar. This relationship will benefit the long-term work of the scholar and Rotarians in tackling the water and sanitation challenges in their home community. - Application instructions and materials will be available at rotary.org
