Internet-capable mobile devices now
         outnumber computers
By 2015, 80% of people accessing the internet will be doing so from mobile devices.
                              (2011 Horizon Report)

So what are the implications for your organisation and its learners?

Learning providers can use mobile devices to:

•Increase learner satisfaction and retention
•Widen participation
•Increase interactivity
•Reduce costs – do more with less
•Enhance the quality of teaching and learning
•Improve outcomes for learners
•Enable more creative use of learning spaces and campus sites

InBook

A ‘walled garden’ safe social networking training tool
The InBook Project
The project aims to:
 Provide a safe social networking tool
 Have a more controlled (limited access) membership
 To be used in both a classroom environment and more
    widely
 Be a training tool for establishing the principles of safe
    social networking
 Provide much of the familiar web 2.0 functions
   Provide a forum for e-safety discussions

The project is not aiming to:
 Replace other social networks such as Facebook
JISC TechDis Toolbox
• TechDis Toolbox is a collection of resources which give useful
hints and tips on technologies that can help individuals work
  smarter.

• It is aimed directly at the end users – learners.

• Bite-sized videos and animations, short guides, audio files and
  ‘how to’ word documents

• Small bits of just-in-time information that can be easily
  absorbed.

                  http://www.jisctechdis.ac.uk/tbx
TechDis Ambassadors
• The aim is to promote and celebrate the use of technologies that
help the learning process, especially for those who experience
  difficulties with their learning.
  www.jisctechdis.ac.uk/techdis/keyinitiatives/ambassadors

• A Facebook group has also been set up for TechDis Ambassadors
(both staff and students) at http://tiny.cc/TDAmbassadors and
the hope is that this will form the basis of an ongoing,
collaborative community. Anyone with tips or tricks that promote
and celebrate the use of accessible interventions is welcome to
  join.

• Alternatively people can follow the TechDis Ambassadors on
  Twitter at https://twitter.com/TechDisAmbassad
Techdis Ambassadors
In the video below you will hear directly from a number of
TechDis Ambassadors as they explain how they use
               technology to live and learn.

Do you have examples of practice to share with others?

 • Technology & Business Systems
 • Learning &Teaching
 • Access & Inclusion
 • Learner Services
 • Higher Education
 • Assessment
 • Technology & Business Systems
 • Learner Ambassador
These Learner Ambassador case
           studies will
•Place the learner at the centre of effective practice by
sharing experiences of technology solutions that
helped them.
•Inspire other staff and students who are looking for
solutions.
•Provide students with ideas about how others use
technology.
•Promote effective and innovative practice.
•Provide a spotlight on learners and a chance for
learners to add this to their CVs.
Examples could include
•How a student uses an assistive technology device to accesses
course content and the difference that an accessible document
can make to their learning – providing insights for staff on
accessible content creation.
•How a student uses their mobile device to access their learning
platform on the move.
•Mobile apps that have helped make learning easier.
•How a learner used screen capturing device (e.g. camtasia, Jing
or something similar) to demonstrate their knowledge instead of
writing it down.
•Interesting or innovative ways that a student has accessed
library resources.

  1. Inclusion in eLearning Forum The Inclusion in eLearning Forum is for staff who have an interest in eLearning and/or a responsibility for access and inclusion within this context. The forum meetings, co-ordinated by JISC RSC Scotland will provide an opportunity (for staff from a range of different disciplines) in both FE and HE across Scotland to showcase and demonstrate good practice, to share examples of initiatives/projects that help remove barriers to learning and to network with colleagues who have similar areas of interest. Representation will extend to staff from a range of disciplines including: Support for learning/disability advisors Assistive technologists Learning resources staff Network managers Equality managers Curriculum staff Learning technologists And others who have an interest or responsibility for inclusive practice. Themes/topics for discussion could include: Obtaining resources in alternative formats e-Safety initiatives Inclusive content creation/delivery Enabling technologies (to enhance the learning experience of all learners) Mobile learning Apps for inclusion and productivity Assessment of need Essentially the content of the Inclusion in eLearning Forums will be up to you!
  2. By 2015, 80% of people accessing the internet will be doing so from mobile devices. (2011 Horizon Report) So what are the implications for your organisation and its learners? Learning providers can use mobile devices to: Increase learner satisfaction and retention Widen participation Increase interactivity Reduce costs – do more with less Enhance the quality of teaching and learning Improve outcomes for learners Enable more creative use of learning spaces and campus sites

  4. A uniquely accessible e-Portfolio that enables learners with difficulties and/or disabilities to store, arrange multi media content into simple online pages. Alternative literacy using rich digital media Provides the means for a ‘ digital entity ’ Record and store evidence in the form of video, audio or graphics. Built in text to speech 2008 It was commissioned by/for the Independent specialist colleges. After lengthy sector consultations and trials of existing e-portfolios which seemed to point to the fact that none were suitable for the learners with the specialist college sector. Funding was initially provided by four colleges (National Star, Portland, NYCPE and Oakwood Court) who generously pooled grant funding that they had been offered. Following a tender process the RIX Centre (UEL) was selected to build/design the application. 2009 The next academic year other colleges contributed to this development Phase 1 rollout was initiated iin July 2009. 2012 – Meeting with new developers to adapt/improve and further develop In Folio

  10. The TechDis Toolbox is a collection of resources which give useful hints and tips on technologies that can help individuals work smarter. It is aimed directly at the end users – learners and based on questions that Techdis asked former students (learner ambassadors) who were asked “ In retrospect what should your tutor have told you but never did? ” This short webinar will hopefully provide you with the chance to learn more about the Techdis Toolbox and and consider how the resources found in this toolbox would be of interest to your learners and indeed for staff in your institution. Designed primarily for people with disabilities or difficulties however I believe that this is something that could benefit everyone. bite-size videos, short guides, animations and brief audio files. These small bits of just-in-time information can be easily understood and absorbed allowing users to learn something new and put it into practice straight away. Most people use technology everyday. Using it smarter can help people be more productive, organised and creative.
  11. 6.34 The toolbox has a set of drawers to help users find the tool they need. There are five drawers in total and the first four correspond to skills that are valued by employers: · Technology. · Planning and organisation. · Communication. · Team working. The last drawer provides an overview of resources and strategies that are can be exploited in the day to day technologies that we used (such as Windows, Mac, IOS devices), that can help different users and support different needs The Toolbox was designed primarily for people with disabilities or difficulties however I believe that this resources is something that could benefit everyone. Whilst working at the BBC as Head of Usability and Accessibility Professor Johathan Hassell commissioned research into the use of assistive technology, this research identified that 57% of all computer users (aged between 18 - 64) were likely or very likely to benefit from the use of AT or enabling technology strategies to help their computer use HOWEVER According to Office for Disability Issues - only 6-8 % of people actually use AT to access the internet. This highlights the fact that there is a huge potential that have not been exploited for people to benefit from inclusive strategies and enabling. Also when we talk about AT this doesn't ’ always mean purchasing expensive technologies. Settings in day to day technologies ( Windows, Word, Mac, IOS devices) can be tweaked http://www.hassellinclusion.com/2012/01/web-accessibility-myths-2011-part2/ (source EEDP 2008)

  13. Using tablets and Apps for Assessment and Learner. What you will take away from the session: Integrate all aspects of assessment through the use of tablets to capture evidence in every form – video, photographs, sound and text. Learn how to run an on-line induction programme for new learners offering any time anywhere access. Support learners on their own devices to provide improved access to learning resources, guidance and support from any location. Demonstrate savings in travel costs and carbon footprint. This is one of 33 projects being funded by Jisc Advance. The projects represent all countries of the UK and cover all aspects of the FE and Skills sector including work-based learning, adult and community learning, colleges and specialist providers. They focus on a wide range of different technologies and their applications, including  Mobile Learning, Audio feedback, the use of Student Owned Devices, Remote (and automated) assessment and many others.   Find out more about the project.
