Nursing Research:
Opportunities and challenges

R S MEHTA, MSND
1
Importance of nursing research
• The ultimate purpose of nursing is to provide highquality patient care.
• Clinical practice without research is practice based on
tradition without validation.
• Research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of
nursing treatment modalities, to determine the impact
of nursing care on the health of the patients or to test
out theory.
• In order to meet social challenges and needs, nursing
practice must be research based.
R S MEHTA, MSND

Key messages:
1. Nurses should practice to the full extent of their
education and training.

2. Nurses should achieve higher levels of
education and training through an
improved education system that promotes
seamless academic progression.
3. Nurses should be full partners, with physicians
and other health care professionals, in
redesigning health care.
