2. FROM PRAIRIE TO SUPER-VOLCANO
PLAY ME
• Yellowstone National Park sits in the crater of one of the largest super volcanoes on
Earth, nearly 45 miles in diameter (the Sleeping Giant)
• Ash as old as 640,000 years has been found in California matching the volcanic ash of
Yellowstone; ash has also been found all over the northwestern states
• Pools of molten lava have been discovered underneath the entire park system
• The crater was formed during the first super eruption 640,000 years ago when molten
lava built up in the magma chamber causing intense pressure that caused the volcano to
explode
• WHEN WILL THE SLEEPING GIANT ERUPT AGAIN?
• Yellowstone Super-Volcano

5. CREATION OF GRAND CANYON OF YELLOWSTONE
• It is roughly 20 miles long with the
measurement starting at the Upper
Falls to the Tower Fall area
• It is 800 to 1,200 feet deep by
1,500 to 4,000 feet wide
• Present canyon is10,000 to 14,000
years old
• Formed by mechanical erosion
