2. The Camera
• Undoubtedly the most important piece of equipment used in our filming, the use of the
camera was widespread throughout our project. We could attach many pieces of equipment
to it and its various settings allowed us to film our opening in the most effective way possible.
In conjunction, we could use different filming techniques with the camera, such as the 180
degree rule, which gave the scene more of a flow and added to the verisimilitude. Despite
the below average battery life, we were able to learn about usage of the camera quickly and
this helped us to get the most out of it. We used different types of shots with the camera
(e.g. panning) which helped us greatly.
3. Tripod
• This piece of equipment was central to all of filming and allowed a steady
shot and panning without jumping the camera. The camera attached very
easily to the tripod which in turn could be attached to the dolly. Despite
encounters with faulty tripods, we were easily able to replace a faulty one
with a fully functioning one using the schools supply.
4. Lighting
• The school supplied us with all three lights (key, fill and
backlight) which we were able to use as we pleased. Despite a
session learning about the lights and their uses, we decided
against using them in our thriller opening as the naturalistic
lighting added to the verisimilitude in our opinion.
5. Dolly
• We used the dolly frequently in our project as it allowed
steady shots with the advantage of being able to track the
protagonist. Despite the dolly being a large piece of
equipment with manoeuvring problems, we were able to use
it due to the fact we filmed very close to the school.
6. Flip Camera
• This piece of equipment was the first thing that we used in our project. It
was used in the filming of the preliminary task and also was the camera
used when filming peoples reactions to our thriller. The camera was very
beneficial as it was simple to use and very versatile (it was easy to upload
files from it). The camera however did not give the highest quality sound
and vision, but it was sufficient for interviews.
7. iMovie
• This was instrumental in the post-production of our film as it
allowed us to edit the footage shot by the camera. Also, we
were able to add a soundtrack to the footage and we could
select from a wide range of cutting techniques to add to the
quality of our film. After a short practice, the programme
became rather simple to use and was very useful in piecing
together our work.
8. YouTube
• YouTube was important in the uploading of our footage as it
was a very simple way of getting our filmed work to our blog.
Despite a few technically problems during uploading, we were
able to get our work onto the blog with the help of the
schools computer technician. It was also a platform that we
could use when selecting the music for our film, providing it
wasn’t copyright.
9. Blogs
• Our blogs allowed us to show the journey from start to finish
of our coursework and also allowed us to display all of our
work. Work was relatively easy to upload onto the blogs and
despite a few minor technical errors when uploading
slideshows, all work was uploaded hassle free.
