Oil painting originated in ancient civilizations and was used through the ages. It started with organic oils and allowed for application to many surfaces. The long drying time of oils meant artists painted in sessions over days or weeks. Major artistic movements that advanced oil painting included the Neoclassical Era from 1750-1830 known for precise historical works, the Romantic Era from 1790-1875 which emphasized emotion and individualism, and the Realistic Era from 1850-1900 that strived for unembellished accurate depictions influenced by photography. Two influential artworks discussed were David's neoclassical painting "Oath of the Horatii" and Delacroix's romantic piece "Liberty Leading the People
