5. Why Use Invention? There was so much information!we needed…a central place where educators can get help for designing authentic assessment
6. Dimension 4 ProcessUse Knowledge Meaningfully INVENTION Invention is the process of developing original products or processes that meet specific needs
7. The Invention Process INVENTIONA website that provides a step by step guide to creating authentic assessment NEEDA central place where educators can get help designing authentic assessment STANDARDSA guide for educators when creating authentic assessment. Needs to be accessible, user friendly and encompass all year levels and is usable for all KLAs DRAFT 2Synthesized but too limited in its access as in an unpublished print format DRAFT 1Too much informationNot synthesised Not user friendly DRAFT 3website is cost effective, more accessible and allows others to share
9. What is Authentic Assessment? Mueller (2001) suggests it is a form of assessment that requires students to perform real-world tasks that demonstrate meaningful application of essential knowledge and skills. “…Engaging and worthy problems or questions of importance, in which students must use knowledge to fashion performances effectively and creatively. The tasks are either replicas of or analogues to the kinds of problems faced by adult citizens and consumers or professionals in the field.” (Wiggins, 2003)
14. STEP 1What Are The Standards? Essential Learnings Learning Management Question 2 Q2) Where does my learner need to be? Declarative and Procedural Outcomes
15. STEP 2How To Select An Authentic Task QSA Design Decisions for Quality Tasks Learning Management Questions 1 and 3 Q1) What does my learner already know? Q3) How does my learner learn best? What does good performance on this task look like? To determine if students have performed well on the task, you will identify and look for characteristics of good performance

17. STEP 3How To Identify the Criteria for the Task How well did the students perform? So you can discriminate among student performance across criteria
18. STEP 4How To Create the Rubric How well should my students perform? The minimum level at which you would want most students to perform is your… What do students need to improve upon?Information from the rubric will give students feedback and allow you to… ADJUST INSTRUCTION GRADE or BENCHMARK

SADIWelcome everyone I’d like to introduce you all to our team Amanda, Rachel, Sheena and I am Sadi. Our topic today is exploring authentic assessment to ensure student success in educational settings. Our question is “What tools can Learning Managers use to develop authentic assessment for ensuring student success.
SADIFor the Assessment Task we had to apply our topic to one of the Dimension 4 Processes of using knowledge meaningfully. Fred Newmann highlights the importance of distinguishing between projects that ask students to reproduce knowledge and those that ask students to produce knowledge. So it’s reproduce knowledge versus students producing knowledge such as solutions, decisions, clarifications, explanations and insights.
SADIHowever, before deciding on which process to use we decided to do some primary research on our chosen topic of Authentic Assessment and gain insight into the perspectives of teachers from across the education system. Here is a video that re-enacts our findings.
RACHELFrom the video we just watched three main perspectives were apparent. Some teachers were only using traditional forms of assessment, some could see the benefits in authentic assessment but were not sure if they were doing it correctly and needed further assistance. Whereas, others like Miss Knowalot clearly knew what it was, saw the benefits, understood the underlying theories and could apply authentic assessment to the curriculum frameworks.
RACHELAfter reviewing the teachers’ perspectives on authentic assessment from our primary research and the secondary research such as theorists and the policy documents it was clear that there was a plethora of information that needed to be synthesized. If only there was a central place that streamlined all the information and provided a step by step guide to authentic assessment. So we decided that we should invent a tool for Learning Managers to help them
RACHELUsing one of the Dimension 4 Processes we knew that Invention would meet our criteria. The DoL manual states that “Invention is the process of developing products or processes that meet specific needs.”
SHEENAWe then used the graphic organiser as we worked through our Invention Process. Read through the processes. Now Amanda will step you through our website.
AMANDAGoes through the website.
AMANDANone of the policy documents refer specifically to Authentic Assessment. However, the Essential Learnings, QCARF, ACARA and Education Queensland all discuss many of the characteristics of authentic assessment in their policy documents for example, the new basics include the Productive Pedagogies which advocate the inclusion of Intellectual Quality such as higher order thinking, deep knowledge and understanding, substantive conversation, knowledge as problematic and metalanguage. It also includes connectedness which involves connectedness to the world and problembased curriculum.
SHEENAIn today’s presentation we have shared with you our Primary and Secondary research which helped us identify there was a need for a step by step guide to authentic assessment. We proposed the question “What Tools Can Learning Managers Use To Develop Authentic Assessment To Ensure Student Success? We demonstrated how we used the invention process through the use of the graphic organiser. We researched authentic assessment synthesizing theorists such as Wiggins, Mueller, Cummins & Maxwell as well as the policy documents such as the Essential Learnings, The New Basics, Productive Pedagogies, and QCARF.From our research we created a website that included our research as well as a 4 step guide to Authentic Assessment which Amanda has just shown you.We hope that we have demystified how to develop authentic assessment and that you all use our tool the next time your planning your assessment tasks.Thank you.
