‘A drama of dysfunctional love’
Critics see the text as if it were a kind of dream. This
means that the text represses its real (or latent) content
behind obvious (manifest) content. The process of
changing from latent to manifest content is known as the
dream work, and involves operations of concentration
and displacement The critic analyses the language and
symbolism of a text to reverse the process of the dream
work and arrive at the underlying latent thoughts.
A reading which is a
merging of dreams and
reality.
A psychoanalytic reading would see all
the characters as having a fear of
intimacy.
•Main Question Such A
Reading Would Consider:
What unconscious motives
are operating in the main
character?
Tom’s relationships with women, including his wife, reveal his
desire for ego gratification rather than for emotional
intimacy. For Tom, Daisy represents social superiority: she’s
not the kind of woman who can be acquired by a “Mr Nobody
from Nowhere” like Jay Gatsby. Tom’s possession of Myrtle
Wilson—whom Nick describes as a “sensu[ous],”
“smouldering” woman with “an immediately perceptible vitality”
reinforces Tom’s sense of his own masculine power, which is
why he brings her to fashionable restaurants where they are
seen by his male acquaintances.
Although Gatsby believes that his ultimate goal is the
possession of Daisy, she is merely the key to his goal
rather than the goal itself. Gatsby had set his sights
on the attainment of wealth and social status long
before he knew Daisy. The boyhood “schedule” of
Jimmy Gatz in which the young man divided his day
among physical exercise, the study of electricity,
work, sports, the practice of elocution suggests that
he’d long planned to live the “rags-to-riches” life
associated with such self-made millionaires.
• Daisy’s affair functions as a psychological defence; if her
marriage wasn’t important then why would she
defend against it?
• Gatsby and Myrtle are psychological tokens in the
Buchanan’s marriage. Who kills who?
Gatsby’s outrageous idealization of Daisy as the perfect
woman—she can do no wrong; she can love no one but
him; time cannot change her—is a sure sign that he
seeks to avoid intimacy, for it is impossible to be intimate
with an ideal.
• Green: hope and promise. The green
light at the end of the dock.
• Yellow: wealth and depravity. Gold
objects? Gatsby’s desire for wealth and
Eckleburg’s spectacles.
• White: purity (lack of it). Clothing?
