4. Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong learning Sector (DTLLS) is designed
for those already in a full teaching role or intending to enter the
profession so they can achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The qualification is appropriate for teachers, tutors, and trainers who
may be working within a School, Academy or Sixth Form College or in
the Independent Sector and Free Schools or an FE College, Adult and
Community Learning Centre, Learning Provider and for those
delivering work based training e.g. within voluntary, community and
private and public organisations.
What is a DTLLS

Learning Sector
5. The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
(DTLLS) is for Pre-service or In-service Teachers, and is aimed at
candidates who:
• Are deemed to be in a Full Teacher role; or
• Would like or require a full Level 5 qualification allowing them
to teach; or
• Are seeking career progression within their area of work; and
• Have access to a minimum 100 teaching practice hours
(whether pre -service or in -service).
• Teach on both a one-to-one and group basis for a variety of
learners, across a range of levels.

6. The aim of the diploma is to provide candidates in full teaching
role with the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills
needed to effectively fulfil their teaching role and to claim
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

range of learning institutions within the Lifelong Learning
Sector.

Aims & Objectives
8. • From 1 April 2012 Further Education Teachers with Qualified
Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status are recognised as
qualified to teach in schools. This will allow them to be
appointed to permanent posts in State Maintained Schools
in England and they will be paid on the Qualified Teachers’
Pay Scale.
• The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in Lifelong Learning Sector
(DTLLS) has Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status
(QTLS) and therefore also Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The Rules
9. • Those with Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) /
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) status can undertake a Teaching
role in a School, Academy or Sixth Form College and in the
Independent Sector and Free Schools.
• Statutory instrument 2012 No. 431, which was laid in parliament
on 9 March 2012, amended the 2003 Regulations so that
holders of QTLS who are IFL members have Qualified Teacher
Status (QTS) and may be appointed to permanent positions as
qualified teachers, without any further induction requirements.

10. Candidates should be qualified to level 3 or be able to demonstrate
level 3 skills in the subject they intend to teach, have access to 100
teaching practice hours and possess reasonable levels of language,
literacy, numeracy and ICT.
All candidates will be interviewed by us to ensure suitability on the
course by meeting the following criteria:
• Proof of being capable of meeting the new LLUK professional
standards for the learning and skills sector by the end of their
course.

11. • Able to read and communicate clearly and accurately
enough to meet the requirements of their training and the
assessment tasks for each unit.
• Have proof that they do not have a criminal background
which might prevent them from working as a teacher with
young or vulnerable adults.
• Hold a relevant vocational and/or academic qualification in
his/her own area of specialisation in addition, candidates
should ideally have one of the following: A First Degree, a
professional qualification, recognised as being of
practitioner level also relevant industrial/commercial
experience at an appropriate level.

Course Content, Structure
& QCF Credit Values
13. A minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice is
required for this Diploma.
You need to have evidence of 100 hours of teaching,
and 8 of those hours are to be observed by us.
Teaching Practice
Requirement
14. • You are allocated a mentor who will support you throughout
the course and be available to answer any questions.
• The course is delivered through face to face and also
coursework consisting of reading, questions and activities.
• Each module is covering a different aspect of the course and
includes activities.
How is the training
delivered?
15. • At the end of each unit there are specified assignments to
complete, which are marked and internally moderated.
You will also need to keep a Reflective Amount / Log of 100
hours teaching, 8 of which will be observed in your workplace.
• There is also a micro teach to attend, these are held locally
throughout the UK.
• Knowledge of relevant elements of minimum core is
embedded within the coursework.
How is the training
delivered?
16. What happens afterwards?
Once you have completed DTLLS, it will enable you to
be employed in a Full Teacher role.
How long does it take?
The total Guided Learning Hours for the DTLLS course is 398
plus 100 hours teaching. This is made up of training, assignments
as well as self-study. The course recommended length is
12 months to 18 months.
Time & Completion
17. The course has the Following exit route at which certification
can be made:
• Level 3 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
• Level 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
• Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
To obtain the full Teacher Training Certificate, Qualified Teacher
Learning and Skills status (QTLS) and therefore also Qualified
Teacher Status (QTS) the Learner would need to complete the Level 5
Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
Certification
18. Most prospective students will be eligible for a Government
funded student loan, which covers the cost of the fees in full.
Loan repayments start after the completion of the Qualification
and when the individual is earning over £21,000. Loan repayments
are low, for example, someone earning £25,000 would repay £30
a month.
